Publisher's summary

Return to the turbulent history of what would become the Malazan Empire....

After the disappointments in Li Heng, Dancer and Kellanved wash up on a small insignificant island named Malaz. Immediately, of course, Kellanved plans to take it over. To do so they join forces with a small band of Napans who have fled their home. However, Kellanved is soon distracted by a strange and dangerous ancient structure. Back in Li Heng, Dassem, now the proclaimed Sword of Hood, finds himself being blamed for a plague which leads him to a crisis of faith - and searching for answers.

During all this, the neighboring island of Nap threatens war and allies are beginning to wonder about Kellanved's sanity. Dancer now faces a hard choice: should he give up on his partnership? Especially when his friend's obsession with shadows and ancient artifacts brings the both of them alarmingly close to death and destruction. After all, who in his right mind would actually wish to enter the Deadhouse?

Fast Paced

I really enjoyed pacing and learning the back stories on the take over of Malay Island.

Advancement of central characters story arc

Lots happening but no real home runs or jaw dropping sequences or shocks
Lightly written

Lack of consistency from book to book bugs me

Some cool moments but overall I just really wish it was more similar to the prior book. I just couldn't get into any of the characters this time and feel really let down how much focus was pulled in so many directions.
I absolutely loved it he first book in this series as it felt more zoomed in on plot lines, world and just a handful of really well written characters. This sorta did away with most of the established characters in the first book and felt really over stretched with the plot. I also just didn't like the writing for any of the side characters, never felt like I got enough time to really attach to any of them. It felt heavily reliant on references to the rest of the series and hoping you already had a set opinion in place with how you feel about them so maybe that's why it didn't bother to build them up as much? I'm not sure.

Overall the plot just got so boring, i often felt so much fluff and time wasted. It was a struggled to get through. When the big moments came around it was fun, but just in the way an action movie would, i struggled to really thread everything together as something cohesive.

I'm not sure why but this authors writing style just always is such a hit or miss with me. Some books just really have everything I want and then the style sorta changes into something way different and then it bounces back to something I'm more vibing with. I'll definitely get into the next book because I love this world but the lack of consistency really bugs me. It's not terrible writing but it's just a bit disorganized for my taste.

This is a first listen but second time through

I still love it. Kellenved and Dancer are some of my favorite characters, in all forms.

Not a great listen

A bit disappointed with this book. Oh well.. onto to the next one and it’s a little more attention catching.

Great !!

Fantastic book that really pushes the intrigue and all the characters involved compared to the first entry in the series. The first book was very good but Esslemont kicked in another gear for this one. Can’t wait to see what happens in the third book.

Better than first book

I would say that I enjoyed this book more than the first one in the series. My only issue with this book was the recording, I think the audio mixer could have done a better job, there were times when it sounded like the book skipped so I thought I has accidentally pushed the skip button so would rewind only to find out that it was the audio recording changing. Besides that I greatly enjoyed listening to this book and am looking forward to find out what happens in the next book.

Lots of loose ends to tie up

I enjoyed the story, but struggled a bit to figure who the characters were. lots of back and forth. Finally near the end some things became more clear. Still a rollicking tale, good story and interesting characters.
