Publisher's summary

An epic tale of adventure and intrigue, Daughter of the Empire is fantasy of the highest order by two of the most talented writers in the field today.

Magic and murder engulf the realm of Kelewan. Fierce warlords ignite a bitter blood feud to enslave the empire of Tsuranuanni. While in the opulent Imperial courts, assassins and spy-master plot cunning and devious intrigues against the rightful heir. Now Mara, a young, untested Ruling lady, is called upon to lead her people in a heroic struggle for survival. But first she must rally an army of rebel warriors, form a pact with the alien cho-ja, and marry the son of a hated enemy. Only then can Mara face her most dangerous foe of all - in his own impregnable stronghold.

Excellent narration brings an old favorite to life

I'm always hesitant to try the audio version of a favorite book. I was so excited to see this series on Audible and am relieved to report that Tania Rodrigues narration was excellent with voice and pronunciations as I have always heard them in my head. I look forward to listening to the other two in the series.

slavery & violence against women

I don't need another keep slaves, kill people beat women story. No thanks. I can read the news for that.

I tried really hard since it is well written and performed, but golly I am bored to death with world building on old imperialist concepts that include tacit complacency about slavery, violence against women and world-building on a paternalistic hierarchical paradigm. I I got impatient with what felt like regurgitation historical fiction. At this point I really need to find authors who are focused on a brighter vision of the future and fictional worlds that depict humanity capable of being more than they're sore violent abusive and exploitative tendencies. Perhaps it got better later in the book and I'm missing out but I just can't sit through it.

Interesting World/Culture

This series is one of my favorite. Another series I read as a young adult. It's still good as a "not so young" adult. A book that is good to read as a 20 something and a 50 something has a wide attraction. I did enjoy it for nostalgic reasons, but not only for that. Highly recommended if you like interesting and different worlds and cultures. #magic #femaleprotagonist #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Finally!

I've waited for Audible to get this book for a long time and it is very well done. So good to revisit this classic fantasy novel - full of intrigue and with a quite different world from your typical fantasy novel with a compelling main character and a plot that is always moving. Great read!

Not as amazing as Magician series.

The whole culture of the story shifts away from fantasy to a Japanese culture of honor with only slight overlap with the Magician series. Very little fantasy in the story and just not what I would have expected in a Feist book.

Slow start, brilliant end

This first book in the series of Mara has a lot of buildup for the main story. I found it a bit slow in the middle part. Really liked the ending, which was satisfying but also intrigued me enough to want to buy the next book.

Great story.

An excellent book. Great fantasy. I'm already downloading book two in the series. I got so engrossed listening that I missed my bus stop...worth it.

Wish there were more!

3 books isn’t enough for this diverse world, Mara is the most intriguing character since Pug/Milamber! Himself!

Not Feist

If you've read any other Raymond Feist books, you'll recognize very quickly that this is NOT in his normal style. In my opinion, it's not an improvement.
