Publisher's summary

Bryony and her sisters have come down in the world. Their merchant father died trying to reclaim his fortune and left them to eke out a living in a village far from their home in the city. But when Bryony is caught in a snowstorm and takes refuge in an abandoned manor, she stumbles into a house full of dark enchantments. Is the Beast that lives there her captor or a fellow prisoner? Is the house her enemy or her ally? And why are roses blooming out of season in the courtyard? Armed only with gardening shears and her wits, Bryony must untangle the secrets of the house before she - or the Beast - are swallowed by them.

A delightful take on a classic fable

I enjoyed this take on classic fable. I enjoyed the gardening, the mystery, poor Fumblefoot.
the slow budding of the relationship between the Gardener and the Beast. It's sweet.

My Favorite Beauty & Beast Version

We discovered Ursula Vernon when Digger won the Hugo for Best Graphic Story in 2012, and have been buying her work in multiple formats since then. The quirky humor that runs through all her work - even the horror novels - often makes me laugh out loud. Bryony & Roses is one of my comfort listens; I'll often fire it up while deciding what to listen to next, like a short, funny palate cleanser.

Love Kingfisher

I will pick up anything by T. Kingfisher, and I love a Beauty and the Beast retelling. This beauty is especially awesome because she is a tough gardener. I would recommend this book.

Numinous and engrossing.

I've been following the author since she was an artist on Lothlorien. She has never disappointed

A fun take on a fairy tale

I had a few issues with the story early on, but they were 100% resolved when her sister got a moment to tell her what an idiot she was being. In the end I really enjoyed it. My only issue is with the performance, the narrator has put on a weird super posh British accent that doesn’t align with anywhere I’ve been in the UK. It felt contrived and I found that distracting.

A Different Tale of the Beast

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys reinvention of traditional stories.

What other book might you compare Bryony and Roses to and why?

Ella Enchanted would be a good comparison book for Bryony and Roses.

What about Justine Eyre’s performance did you like?

Love that British accent. Justine Eyre reads with a cultured accent that is a perfect fit for this story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, this was a book that I wanted to listen to for a bit and then digest a bit. There is a lot of imagery and mystery involved. Sometimes I had to go back and relisten to parts of it.

Beauty & the Beast, solved and improved.

The story was a great improvement on the original fairytale, and lots of fun to listen to. The characters felt real it kept me guessing how it would end. Another Kingfisher banger. Fantastic.
The world needs a kingfisher retelling of every fairytale that has ever been made into an animated movie by Disney.

Delightful retelling of Beauty and the Beast

Very well written tale. I found the characters funny and charming.

Note: the narrator has a VERY posh accent that is distracting at times

Lovely & clever

I would have scoffed at the idea of another re-telling of Beauty & the Beast, but this was very good. A fun listen.
