A great and varied collection of sci-fi

This collection of stories shows of how varied and interesting science fiction can be. The stories range of straight up action stories set in a spaceship, to philosophical stories about what is or is not sentient life, and everything in between. Some are light and fun, some a deep and thought provoking. most, if not all, are straight stories, without the twist in the tale you often get in short stories. All are interesting and worth the time it takes to go through them. Unlike many collections of short stories I didn't feel there was a clunker between them.

My favourite would be “Interview for the End of the World”, which tells of a genius billionaire as he interviews people to be part of the small list of people getting onto the only spaceship leaving Earth before a life ending meteor hits. While not particularly surprising how it ends, it is engaging and uplifting in the telling.

Narration is split between Nicole Poole and Greg Tremblay, depending on if the main character of the story is female or male (respectively). Both do great work here. Well paced, easy to follow, they both engage the text well. Neither do large character voices, but they vary enough between characters that you never lose track of who is speaking.

My only issue with the collection is that one or two of the stories have internal chapters that then become separate chapters in the audio. This makes tracking which book is which chapter (example saying book 5 is chapter 6 of the audio, while book 6 is chapter 7 through 21). It would have been neater if each story was a single chapter/break in the audio and thus easily traceable.

The stories included are:

– Forward by Kevin J. Anderson
– David VanDyke – “As the Sparks Fly Upward”
– Ann Christy – “Peace Force”
– Felix R Savage – “Guardians of Earth”
– Lindsay Buroker – “Here Be Dragons”
– Chris Dietzel – “The Gordian Asteroid”
– Craig Martelle – “The Trenches of Centauri Prime”
– Josi Russell – “Broken One”
– Chris Pourteau – “The Erkennen Job”
– Daniel Arenson – “The Firebug and the Pharaoh”
– Rhett C. Bruno – “Interview for the End of the World”
– Steve Beaulieu – “Night Shift”
– Lucas Bale – “A Friend to Man”
– Jason Anspach – “…Space Pirates”
– Will McIntosh – “Drive”
– Maya K. Bohnhoff – “Water Babies”
– David Bruns – “Take Only Memories”
– Patty Jansen – “This Deceitful State of Truth”

A potpourri of amuse-bouche sci-fi stories

This anthology was enjoyable. I do prefer longer novel-spanning stories, but thats just me. If you want a lot of good little stories this is a great collection.

I would love to see longer versions in each of these stories.

This was at excellent audio book

This was that excellent audio book I enjoyed the vast majority of the stories. And the near readers were pretty good. The male narrator I think was much better at doing the durations and the drama than the female narrator. Unfortunately the female narrator could not act out any male character voices. However she was not a terrible narrator I did enjoy most of what she narrated. I just found the male narrator was a had a more broad spectrum of voice acting to draw from to be able to do both male and female characters. However I would have to say I would definitely recommend this book to anybody that like scifi because all the stories are good I wish some of them would just continue cause I was like man I can't believe that ended this Q go into a series

Great collection, superb performances, but...

I just kept wanting more after each brief tale. On the one hand these were excellent tales but in the end I did not enjoy having them end so quickly!

If you're looking for a sampler's delight, then this is the audio book for you! Based on my listen, I will definitely be looking at a number of these author's that I had not heard of, read, or listened to before.

From a narration standpoint, both were superb! I greatly enjoyed Greg Tremblay's past work (Scythe) and his narration here was just as great. Nicole Poole's narration was also very satisfying. Both narrators delivered pleasant and engaging narrations with plenty of character variation and nothing that I felt I could complain about!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

delightful!

Thank you so much for providing a wealth of interesting new stories. Each story was a delightful listen but the compilation's breadth took me back to a mind opening youth.
