A Well Thought Out Thriller

4.5 out of 5 stars

I remember reading Red Hope over a year ago.  I even finished my review by saying that I would read the sequel if Dreese ever wrote one - well apparently I was a year and a half ahead of my time.  All jokes aside Blue Hope was a crazy thought out book that had twists and turns and a lot of perilous situations.

Blue Hope tells at least three distinct stories in one.  The beginning picks up where Red Hope left off.  The crew is left in Mars - fighting for their lives against the elements - and each other. Landing on Mars was just the beginning - getting back in one piece is another. There is also a crazy set of events that happen on Earth that the book leads with causing other issues that will need to be addressed later in the story. We then jump to a treasure hunt unlike any other in the world. And finally, we are sent back to space trying to find humanities last hope. (this was harder to write since I couldn't give away a lot of the major plot points and spoilers).

I can tell that Dreese has grown as an author since writing Red Hope.  Blue Hope was a book with a lot of different angles all leading to one climactic scene and set of events - it was beautifully thought out and definitely took a crazy outline to map point A to point Z.

I was finishing the book up last night and there was a scene that bugged me - thankfully it was late and I can't actually remember what it was, but I do remember thinking "well that can't happen".  And not in a "this is a science fiction book" way - but just a "that's not even possible" way. Either way - it was so late in the story that it didn't really take me out of the story for more than a moment and wasn't memorable enough that I was able to recall it for the review.

Dreese states that this can be read as a standalone and while I tend to agree - I would check out Red Hope first - it's not too long of a book and it really sets the stage for who the main character is.  You'll figure out that he could be considered the hero and the antihero. He is one of those guys you want to like but he'll keep giving you reasons to hate him a little.

Overall, I think that Blue Hope was a much more thought out story and it had a ton of things that people from all walks of life would like.  There is alien conspiracies, space exploration, post-apocalyptic, political drama, personal drama, personal vendettas, deep sea diving, African jungle exploration, treasure hunting, and a lot more.  Dreese was able to pile all of this into a book that was a blast to read and I found myself staying up far too late to finish.

I was voluntarily provided with a free copy of this book. It has not affected my review in any way. If you enjoyed this review, please vote for it! Every vote helps.

Story is a bit fantastic but really fun.

A light and quick version of the Martian followed by a jungle adventure and then the Moon.

Enjoyed It

Didn't explore the complex nature in which the public would respond to a miracle drug developed by martians. But that's ok. I enjoyed the listen. I always enjoy when a new author can pull me for awhile leaving me wanting more.

The First One was Pretty Good

The first one was pretty good, it had some nice moments and some interesting characters. All in all, I was hooked and ready for the next one! But, uh, man oh man. Characters started acting in ways that didn’t seem to match up to their established behavior and more than anything the story just jumped the shark.
