Publisher's summary

The fifth novel in the number one New York Times best-selling series

When Branson, Missouri, is hit with a death wave - four unsolved murders - it doesn't take an expert to realize that all is not well. But luckily for the locals, Anita Blake is an expert in the kinds of preternatural goings-on that have everyone spooked. And she's got an "in" with the creature that can make sense of the slayings - the sexy master vampire known as Jean-Claude.

One of the BEST "Anita Blake VH" Novels written

I will be quick. I never review anything, but after all these years, I finally decided to just give the same kind of review most Laurel K. Hamilton fans have said about the "Anita Blake Vampire Hunter" series: "These incredibly thought out and masterfully narrated books WERE in my all time top three audible book series, worthy of more than two or three listens.
HOW VERY SAD THAT THIS WRITER DECIDED TO BRING IN HER OWN SEX LIFE TO THE EYES AND EARS OF HER FANS.
The first, maybe eight or nine books were incredible and then, tedious, boring and long winded descriptions of BORING, BORING SEX! i.e. "the front of his body found my opening,". ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?! THIS TYPE OF SHAMEFILLED DESCRIPTORS, ARE ENDLESS AND BEING A MAN ACTUALLY HAD BLOOD RUSHING AWAY FROM "the front of my body."

Serious threat next door

To me, this story is when the series becomes more than rollicking good fun. It’s way more seriously dangerous and the innocent lives lost have more impact.
Anita goes out of town with trainee Larry Kirkland to see if she, or they, can raise an entire burial ground partially dug up by bulldozers. Anita is acknowledged as the only one with the strength and talent to do the job. More than just being an Animator, she’s learning what it means to be a Necromancer.
Dolf and the R.P.I.T. Crew are understaffed and tied up in St Louis, so they call on Anita to respond to local police at a murder site. Anita and Larry are caught up in a supernatural serial murder that shakes them both. Anita demands Jean-Claude’s help in reaching out to the local Master of the City to request her help in tracking down their killer. It takes everything Anita has and is to escape the Master and her crew, who turn out to be the greatest threat of all. Wowza. Years later, this one still sticks with me.
This audiobook has Excellent production and narration.

Blame the rating on Audible

Any additional comments?

First let me say, I loved this book and this narrator. Unfortunately I HATE the narrator they replaced Kimberly Alexis with in the more recent releases. Audible in it's infinite wisdom will not set up a way for me to get those books out of my "recommendations based on previous ratings". Because I rated the early books so highly they feel that they HAVE to recommend the later books in the series based on those ratings. I've emailed Audible asking for a fix for this and got no response. At this point I don't think there is one book in my recommendations that I haven't already read/purchased someplace else or that I cannot stand the new narrators. So in order to get some new recommendations had to go back and trash a whole bunch of books that I love. This truly sucks and is something I did NOT want to do. I'm blaming this on Audible.

Been reading this series off and on for years and love it!

All of the Anita Blake books are great, but the early books are awesome and this is one of them! I’d read this series when I was 17 and started it again at 34. Still as amazing as I remember! So glad the series is still going!!

Still Love Anita

I love these audiobooks! I've been reading her books since I was in middle school, I'll be 33 next week. So she's been in my life on and off forever! I've been re-reading (listening) the series. With the audiobooks, I've finally found a way to get my husband into them. We both LOVE these audiobooks. I see people complaining about the sound effects, I love them. The gunshots and the music every once and a while was awesome. Even Bloody Bone's voice.... it was all very well done I thought. I asked my husband today if he wanted to take a break from this series for one book and he was not having it. He wants to finish now... I've created a monster! lol

My favorite Anita Blake so far!

LOTS of action and edge of your seat suspense. I loved Anita in this one, and her sidekick too. The love interests in the storyline have good spark. The narration was excellent with all characters, with the exception of Jean Claude. His voice seemed a bit too high and his accent was off. 4 1/2 stars for story and narration.

Good, not great

Enjoyed this book, but not the brilliance of the first several books. The very ending is redeeming.
