Three hundred years ago, a slave sorcerer bought his freedom by showing his master how he could live forever - by using the sacrificial deaths of his own children as a channel to absorb the life essence of others. Now in present-day Los Angeles, two men have seen their daughters consumed by a sorcerous flame and find they have the skills to confront the evil ancestors who have preyed on their family for centuries.

Story = A+ Narrator = D
The story is a great story based in magic & mysticism and the elements that tie the characters together are intriguing and well thought out.
Sadly in the audio performance the flaws of the narrator are the points that stand out the most & the 1 phrase: "Don't kill mah babies!" still resonates with me & not for the impact of the line itself, but for the delivery by the reader.
The performance, in my opinion, would have been better if the producers would have stuck to the 3 R's...Rehearsal, rehearsal, rehearsal. There were simple things that could have been changed, simple pronunciations that were nowhere near the actual words as well as some of the characterizations being not quite on the mark for me.
With a different narrator this would have been an enthralling must hear book that would have kept my ear-buds in my ears for hours.
Keep well in mind that this is a great book and if you can get around the various mishaps that happen throughout the reading then you'll find it greatly rewarding. Barnes is a very talented writer and well worth the interest and the investment of your time.
