Publisher's summary

The Imperials have devised a cunning new method of destroying Rebel worlds. Captain Leo Blake is largely responsible for both our survival and our current predicament. He and his crew are infamous among the stars. As a result, when ships of an unknown configuration begin flowing out of swirling rifts above Earth, Blake is called upon again to deal with the problem.

But the approaching fleet isn't what it seems. They're employing an entirely new way to exterminate Rebels. They will accept nothing less than conquering Earth - or, better yet, destroying all life on our planet.

Alpha Fleet is the third book in the Rebel Fleet series.

The best of the Rebel Fleet series

A great beginning and the goodness just keeps going. This is certainly the best thus far in this Rebel Fleet series it's what I expect from B.V Larson thank you it's as good as early Star Force and Undying Mercenaries which is high marks in my opinion.

Not as much fun this time around

There were just too many times I had to shake my head at the stupidity of a guy that is supposed to be so clever and be a captain of the ship. This is almost like a Monty python skit. I know it is a bit of tongue in the cheek but too much for me.

Disappointed in story continuity

While this series is an odd one, taking far too many cues and ideas from Larson's Star Force book series, I can let much of this non-originality go... to a point. However, this non-originality knocks down the stars by one. If you're going to write a new space fleet series, choose new concepts. But, this is not where this story goes horribly wrong.

The opening of this novel (first 5 chapters) sees "Admiral Fex" back to his old tricks. Yet, in Orion Fleet (Book 2), "Admiral Fex" had been docked 2,000 status points and was busted back down to a "Junior Lieutenant" (a single silver triangle). Going into this novel "Alpha Fleet", Fex should have STILL been a "Junior Lieutenant", not an Admiral... at least according to Blake's knowledge. Either we as the audience missed a lot of story between Orion Fleet and Alpha Fleet with Fex managing to regain his lost 2,000 points of rank (with Blake becoming aware of this fact somehow) or the continuity between these two novels is simply broken.

Without any explanation to the audience, it must be assumed as broken continuity. Blake should have called Fex by his new Orion Fleet designation as "Junior Lieutenant" until corrected by Fex with a sufficient explanation. Instead, Blake began calling him "Admiral Fex" immediately in this novel... completely ignoring the final events that transpired in chapter 70 of Orion Fleet. In fact, at 6:40 in chapter 5 in Alpha Fleet, Vega asks Blake, "Do you think they got our message?" (they haven't even spoken with the silently approaching fleet) and Blake responds, "I don't see how Admiral Fex could have missed it". Quite a huge story blunder. They haven't yet talked with Fex (or that fleet), and Blake is already assuming he's an Admiral after what happened in Orion Fleet? I don't think so. They don't even know that Fex is on those ships yet as it's still then a grand assumption and educated guess.

This is not only an egregious storytelling mistake and major continuity error, this error should have been caught by not only the author himself, but also the editor and publisher. If this is what we get to look forward to in future B.V. Larson novels, then I'm done with this novel series (and this author) and I'll find another author who is willing to put in the time to maintain proper story continuity between the novels in a series. Yes, there are story mishaps, but this one is far too egregious to ignore.

Worse, Fex shouldn't have even been on those ships. Because Fex is, as far as we know, a Junior Lieutenant, he doesn't even have enough command rank to command a fleet, let alone show up commanding the fleet at Earth's doorstep. The opening of this novel doesn't make any story sense based on the close of Orion Fleet. This continuity error sets up a story foundation that is both sloppy and based on something that doesn't make any sense... leaving the rest of this story (and future stories) a problem. This knocks down the story stars to 1. Tsk. Tsk. Mr. Larson... you can do much better.

A huge dissappointment

Overall I do enjoy Larson's works but Alpha Fleet is an exception. I can't state why that is without spoilers. I will say that with most stories I have no problem adapting the mind set that allows all the amazing things that tech and abilities let the characters achieve. Something that certainly turns me off is outright silliness and illogical behavior (even for the universe the story is set in). Also too much repetition of said silliness. KEEP EVENTS PLAUSIBLE! Alpha fleet may have turned me off to the series. However Mark Boyett's narration was perfect as always.

I am liking this series so far!

I love B. V. Larson and Mark Boyett. Together they make a great duo. Mr. Larson's story writing abilities keep me engaged and interested as well as invested in the story and characters. Mark does a fantastic job of bringing the many characters to life and he is one of my favorite narrators.

I don't know why I keep listening to these. same story, same main. pretty sure the author has never actually talked to a real girl. Dude is a solid narrator though.

Meh. Recycled characters & plots.

The Rebel Fleet series I felt are not as well written as the Undying Mercenaries series. Character development and plot development are too recycled from previous books by the author. Head to Undying Mercenaries for better use of credits. Thankful that audible will let me return for my credits back.

Not sure what this was really about

Of all the sci-fi books I’ve read or listened to, this is the worst. The story was quite ridiculous and the characters were not believable at all. I normally wouldn’t write a review like this but I felt that it’s needed.

More than the sum of its parts.

This is one of those holistic series'. The story is weak yet fundamentally compelling. the narrator is good in primary voice yet limited 'off axis'. Yet, when considered in total, I find myself looking forward to the next book in the series. I continue to believe the overall story arc and universe has a deeper basis. Oh how 80's scifi has molded my expectations :-)
