Publisher's summary

Alternate history master Eric Flint returns in top form with an epic addition to the multiple New York Times best-selling Ring of Fire series.

After carving a place for itself among the struggling powers of 17th-century Western Europe, the "out-of-time" modern town of Grantville, West Virginia, must fight for its life against Dark Age domination.

A cosmic accident sets the modern town of Grantville, West Virginia, down in war-torn 17th century Europe, and a new nation is forged. Now, when United States of Europe ally King Gustavas of Sweden invades Poland, the US of E is dragged into a full-scale European war against ruthless opponents. Meanwhile Mike Stearns, wily and courageous leader of the up-time West Virginians, has been turned out of office in an election. But, like Churchill before (and after) him, Stearns is not done yet. He's determined to stoke the fires of democratic rebellion in Saxony near the main front and thus keep the young nation he founded, and once led, out of the hands of medieval tyrants - tyrants who would like nothing better than to wipe those troublesome upstarts from the future off the time line and go back to the bad old days of oppression and serfdom.

Still The Best

This is one of my most favorite authors, narrated by one of the best orators I’ve heard.

Listen to them all!

Series is worth continuing to hear, but not binging*

& listen at fast speed in talking-head scenes. Those scenes are crucial, but not scintillating. Kudos to Eric Flint—a master writer who has himself another nice series. Review by Rick, April 26, 2018

Yes, that is “binge-ing”, not “bing-ing”
as in Crosby** or cherries.

Awful narrator

Great story, much enjoyed. Narrator nearly ruins it though. Sounds like a monotone old man...while I admire his ability to correctly pronounce words in German and Polish, among others, I wish he didn't put me to sleep doing so. Not joking- I've actually been listening to it before bed on a sleep timer just to get through it.

neurology mistakes

Aphasia is caused by a left hemisphere lesion. 98% of right handers are left hemisphere dominant , Left handed are left hemisphere dominant, mixed dominant, only very few people are truly Rt hemisphere dominant. The seizure is a partial seizure with secondary generalization.

Best to Date

Plenty of daring-do and the wry sense of humor has you chuckling most of the time. Character and plot developments continue which just enhance the experiece. My only criticisms is that one can’t easily tell which title is next in the series but that is mostly an Audibles formatting issue.

The most boring book ever

This author needs to take a course on alternative history from someone like Harry Turtledove. The performance was okay though I usually find this particular reader much better. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Disappointing

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Too many characters, too many war strategies and campaigns. I lost all sense of the story and after 4 hours gave up.

Would you ever listen to anything by Eric Flint again?

Never!!!!!!!!!!!!

What didn’t you like about George Guidall’s performance?

Voce and performance were good just destroyed by the poor story.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Great disappointment. First audible book I have bought that was such a disappointment and waste of time.

Not as good as the first book

The series has an interesting first book, but the sequils are not for me. Too much politics and not enough action.
