Publisher's summary

The fourth book in the Privateer Tales series, this short story steps back in time to the Great Amazonian War.

Shot down behind enemy lines, all Marine Sergeant Pete Hoffen can think of is getting the remainder of his beleaguered platoon back to the extraction zone. But when a cocky, PITA lieutenant orders him to leave behind one of his own, he'll have nothing to do with it.

Big Pete fights to locate his men and get the wounded out of the city, rescue his missing pilot, and avoid ripping the entire city down around him. His capture brings an entirely new problem. Who will rescue the rescuer?

There's a reason Liam Hoffen goes up against great odds in order to do the right thing. He learned from his father that sacrifice and honor go hand in hand.

boring - dance story

I am SO tired of people trying to rewrite the combat sequences from Starship Troopers. I know lots of kids (my students) who think that is what science fiction is... all that science fiction is. And of course, way too much modern science fiction really is just that. When it is on the screen, I call them dance movies. Highly choreographed, prolonged, unrealistic ritual violence. It is written and acted by people who have no understanding of real violence, because of course, people who do, do not see it as entertainment.

Fortunately, this is one of the short "in-between" titles of this series, and not one of the long ones. This series already has way more combat than I would like, although if it is truly well-written from a technical standpoint, I do not mind stories of spaceship combat. However, such stories require real scientific knowledge and a great deal of imagination to understand what the "true" nature of such conflict would likely be, and to make it consistent within the framework of the fictional "reality" of a given story or series.

When I was starting this series, I was hoping for something far more like the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper (Lowell) books. I wish I could find another series as intelligent and largely non-violent as that. Lots of pointless violent action is just "shooting fish in a barrel." Who cares. If you want gratuitous action, then read romance novels. At least it is gratuitous sex instead of violence. Why would anyone not rather have sex than violence, even if only theoretical. Of course, nobody who has experienced real violence wouldn't MUCH rather have sex.

And so, I am hoping the next story will be about "bunk bunnies", but only purely voluntary ones, on equal terms for all consenting adults involved... of course. The golden age of gettin' it on... in spaaaace! ;-)

A little short for a credit.

This story is great if it was a chapter in apart of book 2. Put all of the little stories together and make a book to fill out each character. As a 1 credit title you kind of feel a little cheated.

Love the series, but a full credit for 90 min???

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

An anthology of short stories?

Who was your favorite character and why?

Not really applicable, it was not that deep story

What does Mikael Naramore bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The actor doing the reading was wonderful excellent intonations and characterizations

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Big Pete?

I would have made this one short story in anthology of stories

Any additional comments?

So sales practices are shortsighted.

Good Origin Story

This traces the last Mission of Big Pete. It shows how he met Stera, his wife and how he got to the Asteroid. Good story but think it should have been cheaper. full price was a bit much, take $2 off it would be about right. I dont regret it but it wasnt long enough to justify the price.
If price is a big deal, id skip it if your interested in the Main cast. If not, it fills in the blanks a bit.

Spoilery area below

How come Pete didnt acknowledge Stera or his Son's ship being named after his lawyer from his case? Seems like adding Stera into the story was a stretch and a forced injection for the sake of adding another legacy character, at the cost of continuity.

Short but sweet.

I was expecting a longer experience. l liked the performance. It was great but as I said a bigger experience for getting out of enemy territory was expected. It was abbreviated and hurried in my opinion.

Nice background

Another little side trip. Does give some good background. Background that's needed in later books.
