Story vs Narration

I have read all three books in the series and decided to buy all three audiobooks for convenience. I started listening to the first today and have had a really hard time with it. The female narrator has a very difficult time with the male voices, to the point that I laugh almost every time she tries one. A lot of the time she sounds like a Batman imitation. If she were only doing female voices, I wouldn’t have a problem. However, it was very annoying and distracting through the story. Still, I love the story, so I’ll deal with it.

Ehh.

The narrators for this story we’re really bad, to the point that I had to quit listening to the story halfway in and actually read it. The fake accents that the female narrator did were very badly done and distracting. The story itself wasn’t that great either. I was interested enough to buy the other books and I finished the series in a weekend, but the storyline moved a little too quickly, the love scenes were awkward, and the insta-Love was just a bit ridiculous for all four guys. There were also many times where the author used the wrong word or the grammar was bad. Another thing that was distracting was when one character would say something to another character, and there would be a huge internal dialogue and by the time the internal one finished and the other character answered, it’s been a few pages and the reader forgets what the original thing said was. I think this could have been a really good series if the author had put a bit more time into it to make it better and fix those mistakes.

Juvenile Writing

The story has potential but the writing style was very basic. The main character lacks objection, conviction and internal struggle. She gives into anything without any panic or thinking. This makes for a bland and unbelievable story. The progression isn't natural.

Winter's Guardian

The narration initially made it so I was so distracted/annoyed that I got nothing from the story but decided to give it a second chance and just read it. I really enjoyed it. I listened again and was able to ignore the irritation I experienced the first time. I 've actually read the rest of the books finished and have thoroughly enjoyed all.

Worst voice ever

Seriously, the girl had the worst accents ever. Her Scottish accent for one of the characters was a confused Spanish r rolling, drunk, heavy smoker kind of Scottish. Then her regular voice was the worst kind of California valley girl. I mean for real. The guys voice was boarder line board.

Lots of possibilities...

This story and series has lots of possibilities for world building, plot, and characters. It will be interesting to see where Bailey can take it.
Bailey has a lot of creative talent that I believe will prove out in the future. I do recommend a good editor or writing group to help get there. The details have to add up; or be consistent with the author’s world building, for me to enjoy a story. I won’t list details which will end up sounding like bashing - not my intention. But I will say one thing - scent.
Also, call me quirky, but I like the spelling of Jaxson for female and Jackson for male; just like Frances is female and Francis is male; I don’t do neuter names. I like being a woman and won’t apologize for it.
Soudek has a bit of a mature voice for a 20yr old female college student, and very American sounding for a supposedly English-Welsh background and setting.
Collins’ male voice fits a mid 20ish guy.

Love it!

I originally read this series on Kindle, but I love having the audiobooks of my favorite series as well to “reread.”

The narrators for this series are fantastic, and I really liked the performance as well as the story.
