Publisher's summary

It all began with one stolen kiss....

Ten thousand years ago, deep in Regia's forests, the Dryads lived, hidden and aloof, determined to serve the Heart of the World and keep it secret. Shi was chosen at birth to become a Verdant, one of the 20 princesses to sacrifice to the flame. Plagued by curiosity, one night Shi breaks the rules. A Verdant must always remain pure and innocent and never venture out beyond the boundary.

A month after taking the throne, King Leramiun grows restless, confined to the castle by his new responsibilities. After receiving reports about a mass grave in the forests, Leramiun makes a rash decision to investigate by himself. Instead of finding death, he finds Shi, a goddess of life. One stolen kiss...sets in motion the destruction of an entire race.

Verdant Tells Shi's Tragic Love Story

In the first two books Shi became important to me as Forest's guide and confidante. That she is a ghostly guardian makes her all the more intriguing. I longed to know her story and Verdant delivers. Jayne writes a heart-breaking and beautiful story of over-enthusiastic and innocent love that goes wrong.

How love turns to hate and the price of their love is original and haunting. Jayne takes us back in time and shares a story that would be easy to turn into a moral, but her real complex portrayal of the characters and their lives makes it complex and rich.

This is a must read for any Regia fan, or anyone who loves a great story of young love and its folly.

OUTSTANDING WOW!!!!

I am so grateful the author chose to use the next book here to explain all about Shy and her reasoning for her hate for vampires and a secret she's been keeping about that as well . I cried a bit hearing the last chapter... This was a part of this series I was hoping to hear about and thankful it didn't only stay on one person or one thing or change characters like some books do every next book but both in twined in each book which exactly what this awesome fantastic Author has done . Not to mention an award winning performance from the narrator. .. :)

Great story - and no clue yet why it is important

Now that was a good story, well told. The younger prince actions where a bit predictable but was still a good story. The multiple layers of love-hate, right-wrong, change-stagnation, loneliness-togetherness, etc. etc. etc. was a nice treat.

Still puzzling out the importance and relevance to the reset of the series and characters. The killing of the Dryads seems to be a pivotal point in Regia and might be the starting of the decline and major trouble brewing in this present time of the series. I'm sure it is more important than just a nice story to tell Forest.

Incomplete

The ending is without resolution of peace . Sadness is the feeling this book leaves .
Maybe even hopeless. In the battle of good and evil... good did not prevail. Evil won. Hopelessness won.

So far, my favorite in the series

Well done, Tenaya Jayne. So far my favorite in the series. Khristine Hvam does a great job narrating, as usual. My only complaint? 26K words/3 hours is much too short for a story of this magnitude! This would have been a wonderful full novel! But I still couldn't help but give it 5 stars.

Good character development. Good storyline.
Enjoyed it very much. Fills in the past of the other stories.
