Publisher's summary

A warrior trained in bullets and blades, Renata cannot be bested by any man---vampire or mortal. But her most powerful weapon is her extraordinary psychic ability---a gift both rare and deadly. Now a stranger threatens her hard-won independence---a golden-haired vampire who lures her into a realm of darkness…and pleasure beyond imagining. A combat-loving adrenaline junkie, Nikolai dispenses his own justice to enemies of the Breed---and his latest quarry is a ruthless assassin. One woman stands in his way: the seductive, cool-as-ice bodyguard, Renata. But Renata's powers are put to the test when a loved one, a child, is threatened and she's forced to turn to Niko for help. As the two join forces, as desire fans the flames of a deeper hunger, Renata's life is under siege by a man who offers the exquisite pleasure of a blood bond---and a passion that could save or doom them both forever.

Spend some more time among the Midnight Breed.

Worth the wait

I waited almost two years for this book to come on audio. Yes, I did read the paperback. However, the audio was so intense it was not hearing or reading the story for the first time. Reneta is my favorite. You feel what she feels.

Midnight Breed needs masculine narration

I am coming to this series late, and reading it in order, so my comments won't make much of a difference. Just thought I would throw in my 2-cents.
Once I adjusted to the alien back story, the Read was satisfying. I find that I prefer it in text, rather than audio because I have trouble with narrator. Often times Huber sounds bored. Her accents are marginal. That being said, she does better with the Canadian french and the Russian in "Veil" than she did with the Spanish accent in the last book. So far, "Midnight Veil" is the best story.
My favorite continuing stories in this genre are JR Ward's "Black Dagger Series" and Cole's "Immortals After Dark" series. Both are excellently written, original, smart, and deliciously narrated by Jim Frangione and Robert Petkoff respectively. Petkoff does a Scottish Lykae like no other. It actually makes me swoon.
The Midnight Breed series would benefit greatly with a male narrator.

Unexpectedly Sweet & Engaging

Would you listen to Veil of Midnight again? Why?

I've enjoyed re-listening to many bookmarked portions of the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Renata is by far unique to the Breed series to date. She's strong-minded, strong-willed, and a powerful female character. Renata is real... she's had a difficult life and has learned not to count on anyone. If not for Mira, the innocent child she shares difficult circumstances with, she would have no purpose. Niko manages to peel back the many protective layers she uses to shield herself and develop a true partnership.

What about Hillary Huber’s performance did you like?

Huber does a great job acting out some intense scenes in the story. I love her interpretation of accents as well as the consistency of their voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Initially, the story unfolds more slowly. Once Renata breaks Niko out (about Chapter 16), you won't want to put the story down.

Any additional comments?

Along with Midnight Rising (Book 4), Veil of Midnight (Book 5) is pivotal to the overall series' story. The reader really begins to understand the dark plans of Dragos.

One of my favorite series!

The Midnight Breed series has now become one of my top favorite vampire series. I feel I don't need to completely review this one book because it is just one part of the whole, but it was terrific.

I'll be using my credits for the remainder books very soon.

torture, child abuse, slavery

This series is getting a little too dark for me. So depressing. Hopefully it was to set up future story lines. I had to fast forward many times. A little more relationship that is not idiotic would be nice. This story was just not believable to me.

Breed Mates could be smarter

I liked the story and started out liking Renata, but I don't like the storyline where the breedmate ends up turning stupid over they get in over their head. This one made a choice that makes me like her less than any of the others before her.

I'll keep going with the series because I like the story line. I really hope the women get smarter though.

Excellent!

Coming off of the last book which was a big plot filler for me, this book was AMAZING! Action packed with such a good story that it kept me up waaaay past my bedtime! A must, Must, MUST read/listen!

Renata is bad A woman that can take care of herself. I think that she's one of my favorite heroines in this series.

GREAT Story but somewhat predictable

Despite portions of the story being a bit too predictable, this ONGOING story of intrigue, and love is one of the BEST I have ever read.

The Oracle

Another good episode in the Breed way of life. Nico and Renatta are perfect together. I really enjoyed the twist in the end with the GenOne hunter. I am so ready for the next episode.
