Publisher's summary

One hot cop. One bar owner out for redemption. One smoking-hot summer fling destined to leave scorch marks....

Mason Hanks has returned to Rainbow Cove, Oregon with one goal in mind: turn the struggling coastal community into a thriving LGBTQ tourism destination. Step one is transforming an old bar and grill into a gay-friendly eatery. Step two? Don't piss off Nash Flint, the very hot, very stern chief of police who's not so sure he's on board with Mason's big plans.

Nash Flint just wants to keep his community safe and enjoy the occasional burger in peace. He's not big on change nor is he a fan of Mason's troublemaking family, especially his rowdy older brothers. But Mason slowly wins him over with fantastic cooking and the sort of friendship Nash has been starving for.

When their unlikely friendship takes a turn for the sexy, both men try to steer clear of trouble. Nash believes he's too set in his ways for Mason, and Mason worries that his family's reputation will ruin any future with Nash.

Burning up the sheets in secret is a surefire way to crash and burn, and discovery forces a heart-wrenching decision - is love worth the risk of losing everything?

Contains mature themes.

Story and Iggy Toma 5 stars, Marc Bachmann 0 stars

l love this author, and this story is great!! I love listening to Iggy Toma, but I really do not like Marc Bachmann. When I was buying the audio I only saw Iggy Toma's name and I was so excited. I clearly didn't see that Marc Bachmann was part of the audio because if I did I wouldn't have purchased the audible version. His narration is horrible, and it's so difficult to listen to. He pauses when he shouldn't, and he reads like he is reading Shakespeare. It's just so bad. I listened because I really wanted to hear the story, but I will only purchase the book and not the audio version because I can't with Marc.

Didn't care for different narration

Not a fan of Marc Bachmann, paused in wrong places, seemed to put emphasis on wrong words and didn't care for his voice at all. Love Iggy Toma though. And though he changed his tone, he's the only reason narration was given 4 stars instead of 2 or 3. But most of all, I intensely disliked that the characters voices changed depending on who was doing the narration. This is the first duel narrated book I've listened to where character's voices weren't consistent. It was extremely annoying.

The story was good and well enough written that I'd listen to the sequel if it weren't for duel narration and Marc Bachmann's voice. As it stands, I won't get the next book.

Story was good and if not for

Trust With a Chaser

I will admit.. I initially bought this Audiobook because of the two narrators and I did not even read the blurb for the book first. Iggy Toma and March Bachman are at the top of my favorites list when it comes to narrations. And I think that they did a good job co-narrating this one. There were a few times I was a little disappointed but I think it was more about how the book was written and not necessarily the narration for it example; even though the narrators were being switched each chapter for their character, during the sex scenes the men talked a lot. and I felt like the narration at that point should have been done by both narrators and not just the one.. IMO It kind of threw off the scene a little bit . But overall the narration was done well by both men and each one brought a different voice and set of emotions to the story.
Book: knowing that I knew absolutely nothing about this book before I started it was good in a way. it kept me totally enthralled and wanting to hear what happens next. I think that the storyline was good with how the relationship progressed with Nash/Flint and Mason and it had just the right amount of Drama happening.. The only part of the story that really bugged me and I just didn't understand was Nash, He made it seem like there was a huge age difference (it was only like 15yrs or so) and that he was some old geriatric 60+ something man who was at the end of his life when really he was in his mid/late 30's. Idk maybe it was just me but I think too much emphasis was put onto the point of Nash's age. But, that aldo did add a little extra to the story since it was a talking point for people. & I liked the small town Vibe and the drama with the brother & family's. Overall the book was good and I will be waiting on the next book in the series to come out in Audio *with my fingers crossed on the same narrators being used*

terrible narration!

Would you try another book from Annabeth Albert and/or Marc Bachmann and Iggy Toma ?

I love the author but Marc Bachmann's voice just didn't work for the main character. Iggy Toma was OK, but he was doing some strange folksy accent that was distracting and he sounded too old.

Would you be willing to try another book from Annabeth Albert? Why or why not?

Yes! I love her books and have listened to all the Out of Uniform series on audible

Story+Iggy=5stars, Mark=0stars

Had to downgrade review significantly for Marc’s narration which grated on my last nerve. He played Mason with too much camp for my preference, and Nash sounded like a creepy pedo-uncle reading a grumpy old bear. Regardless, it was distractingly different than Iggy’s narration, which was jarring in the extreme. I enjoyed reading the book a lot back when it came out in print and was looking forward to listening to it, but am struggling to limp through.

Should’ve stuck with ONE narrator. Way too jarring to flip back and forth with the amount of conversation that happens. Ends up sounding like 8 voices for the 2 main characters alone - Iggy’s Mason narrating, Iggy’s Mason talking, Iggy’s Nash narrating, Iggy’s Nash talking, and likewise for Mark. Bleh.

Great start to a new series

If you’ve read anything by the author before, you know she’s amazing at giving us really flawless writing and superb characters. Normally I have no patience for the slow burn but it was expertly done here.

We get a lovely slow reveal of how poor, lonely Nash secretly wishes for rebellion in the form of “bad boy” Mason – who isn’t bad at all- and underneath all the grumpy lies the heart of true romantic! (See specifically one adorable picnic and fishing trip!)

There is very little angst and a bunch of really sweet build up to a super romantic finish with some hot, yet tender chemistry thrown in for good measure.

I couldn’t put this down and it literally made my week!

Highly Recommended!
(PS I loved the accuracy of the Portlandisms!)

Audio

So. Amazing! First, I love duo narrations and I thought these two did a terrific job of being just enough different to make the individual characters really pop, but similar enough that it wasn’t jarring when the narrators switched up. I’d forgotten how wonderful Iggy Toma was and how good he is at making a listener feel really involved in a story. He’s really good with pacing and emotion and I loved the voice he chose for Nash – so growly and delicious!

Marc Bachman is no slouch either and does a terrific job with Mason as well! Together these two were really a great duo and I highly recommend this as a terrific way to experience this amazing story!

Narration caused my attention to wander

I liked the storyline, but I didn’t care for Nash’s voice. Not much intensity, and a growly voice that sounded old and worn. I might have preferred reading the book rather than listening. But it is still a good story with a significant amount of angst caused by both families. It didn’t wow me, but if you are looking for a good solid romance read, this fits the bill!

Enjoyable

A take on the classic tale of lovers from the wrong families, the conflicts are mostly handled well. There’s the trouble of ACAB that springs up but one knows going in that one protag is a cop. Mostly, the story worked for me. It’s essentially one long coming out experience that is made less fraught by the characters being old enough to have some perspective & personal resources & good friends. One quibble being that we mostly only see Mason’s friends but they are nice to hang out with too.

Steam: medium for somewhat frequent M/M love scenes on page. It never felt like too much or too little.

Narration: It was quality work but I would have preferred the narrators swapped characters. I kept having to puzzle out who was who because of this.

First book by this author!

I really enjoyed this story!!! I enjoyed rooting for the underdogs! But! Most of all these were confident, kind, smart, loyal, hard working men looking to do good things for good reasons- the characters were likable —and I loved having a window seat to their journey- I will most certainly continue the series
