Publisher's summary

Can a railroad man and a Southern belle turned teacher find a way to work together to achieve their dreams in the new reality of the post-Civil War South?

Sylas Rutledge, former gambler and new owner of the East Line Railway, invests everything he has into this venture, partly to see if he can do it - but mostly to avenge his father. One man holds the key to the railway's success - General William Giles Harding of Nashville's Belle Meade Plantation. But Harding is champagne and thoroughbreds, and Sylas Rutledge is beer and bullocks. Sy needs someone to help him maneuver in high society, and when he meets Alexandra Donelson, he quickly decides he's found his tutor.

Spurning her family's wishes that she marry, Alexandra Donelson is pursuing her passion for teaching at Fisk University, the first freedmen's university in the United States. But her family does not approve, and ultimately her father expels her from the family home and cuts her off completely.

Through her friendship with Mary Harding, Alexandra is thrown together with both General Harding and Sylas Rutledge. And she soon finds herself falling in love with a man whose roguish qualities and adventuresome spirit smack more of recklessness than responsibility.

Sylas Rutledge will risk everything to win the hand of the woman he loves. What he doesn't count on is having to wager her heart to do it.

Set at Nashville's historic Belle Meade Plantation, To Wager Her Heart is a sweeping Southern love story about a nation mending after war, the struggle to move a country forward, and the courage of a man and woman to see themselves for who they truly are - and can be - with each other.

Nice, Feel Good Book

So this book is the last book in the Belle Meade series, I liked this one the best, Alxandra and Sy are really dynamic and I liked their interaction very much .. I liked how both of them achieved their dreams without sacrificing each other and both of them won in the end
one thing I didn't like was how open ended the book was, so many things I wanted resolved but they didn't and this is the last book .. so I guess we will never know, but this was an enjoyable series overall

The narration was nice as well I can't complain about anything

Fantastic Listen!

Another fantastic book from Tamera Alexander! Thank you NetGalley for providing an ebook copy but I waited on the audible.com download and purchased this title for a wonderful listen. Readers will gain insight into the struggles African-American student faced, in specific at Tufts University in Nashville, and those who aided them. Entwined in the story is a beautiful romance between a very unlikely couple. The background also includes great tidbits about railroads and the men who built and ran them as well as the very real dangers faced in railroad travel after the Civil War. I plan to re-read (re-listen!) this story, something I don't often do!

A great story of faith and love in the post-War South!

A young Southern Belle gives up her wealth and status to accomplish a teaching mission, to educate choice black men and women, helping them reach toward their own dreams. Through it and her faith, she conquers her own fears, finding success on her own terms and a love for all time. The author captures the old South, its dark side, old money, and the realistic struggles of those who dared to empower Blacks with education and a future.

Another great listen

Great third installment. All 3 books in series are really stand alone with only very lose mentioning of previous main characters at times other than General Harding his family stud farm and staff.

The story is about a young girl whose calling is to be a teacher for the Freeman at great personal cost. She has to overcome her fears and prior losses as well as recent ones to find happiness.

Faith infused but not overpowering.

Recommend.

Enjoyed this book and series very much

My husband and I listened to this book and we both enjoyed it. The book gives not only a romance story line but a look into culture and the business world in those days. God is great and has brought us a long way.
Recommend to those that enjoy clean moral reading along with adventure.
