Publisher's Summary

In this modern-retelling of "Beauty and the Beast", Savannah Carmichael, betrayed by an unreliable source, returns to her hometown of Danvers, Virginia, with her once-promising journalism career in ruins. Given the opportunity to get back in the game by writing a patriotic human interest piece, Savannah turns her attention to the town hermit, Asher Lee, a wounded veteran who returned to Danvers eight years ago, and hasn't been seen since.
After an IED explosion in Afghanistan took Asher's hand and disfigured half of his face, he's lived a quiet life on the outskirts of Danvers where the locals respect his privacy... that is, until Savannah Carmichael comes calling in a borrowed sundress with a plate of homemade brownies. When Asher agrees to be interviewed by Savannah, he starts feeling things for the beautiful reporter that he hasn't felt in years.
Misfits in small-town Danvers, Savannah and Asher create a bond right away, touching each other's hearts in ways neither thought possible. When a terrible mistake threatens to drive them apart, they'll have to decide if the love they found in one another's arms is strong enough to fight for their hard-won happily ever after.

This listen pulls at your heart strings, not because of the tender, sweet love story that developed between the beautiful sweet natured Savannah and the scarred hermit Asher, no.... it was the bitter betrayal. You know it's coming but nothing prepares you for the extent of pain that the heartbreaking shocking revelation will cause both Savannah and Asher.

Great addictive bitter-sweet love story as Asher tells of the tragic IED incident that changed his life (which is unfortunately all too real today) and there's a lovely paced yet quick to develop romance because the attraction and chemistry was there from the start as Savannah could look beyond his scars and found the mentally wounded man underneath. Beautiful words and romantic scenes make you feel the love between these two characters. With Savannah's love and support Asher slowly begins to rejoin the living once more but the price he would pay for his misguided trust in her nearly broke him and caused a deeper pain than the IED.

Worth a credit? Dual POV's, supportive secondary characters, sex, all American Hero, a naive Heroine and a good narrator made this a very enjoyable creditworthy listen.

- CAROLYN "I love being swept away by a new romance and thankfully Audible's ever growing Library means I get to indulge myself over and over again"

support our veterans

I loved this book and story line. A lot of research went into the possibilities for helping injured veterans. I think its wonderful that 25% of the proceeds go to helping our vets.

The characters are well developed and its awesome to watch their relationship grow from mere acquaintances, to friends, and then to lovers. It really brings home the struggles that many of our vets go through while trying to return to a normal life. This story made me laugh and cry. It has some very intense scenes. My favorite is when Asher makes Savannah keep her eyes closed while he explains his actions and feelings toward her near the end of the book.

This is a very inspiring book and so much more than a simple love story. Definitely worth the credit. Great first book of the series.
