Publisher's summary

The price of survival...

Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl's college to take care of the only family I have left.

There's one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.

My virginity.

A forbidden auction...

Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he's the only kindness in a brutal underworld.

Except he's playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.

The Pawn is a full-length contemporary novel from New York Times best-selling author Skye Warren about revenge and seduction in the game of love.

JUST BLAH BLAH BLAH NO REAL CONTENT

This story had promise but quickly went downhill. I had high hopes because of the V card cache but it fizzled not to mention the narrator was just as stale as the story. Disappointed

Slow Going....

With such high ratings, I was disappointed in the mediocre storyline and particularly in the pace of the story. Took almost 6 hours for the expected to happen due to tons of descriptive dialogue. Even as a cliffhanger, I doubt that I’ll read the next installment. Not that interested.

Pawn Power

Avery James, as a good chess player, chose to risk her life and simultaneously use her chess skills to the fullest. understanding her limitations nonetheless. uncle Landon was a opportunistic, while Gabriel didn't want to choose his true moves, thus, Avery moved forward or backward when advantageous! Enjoyed this book

stupid WOMEN

Please make your female characters less idiotic and the narrator was very monotone. She did have some appropriate inflection but very little and often at minor moments in the story.

Stupid

I'm too old to listen to a stupid book just full of sex. Sex is fine as part of a larger story, but could we please have some type of respectable plot? I'm not really interested in listening to 5 hrs and 45 minutes of porn.

No character building

This was by far the worst books ever. Blah blah blah just random thoughts and no good story line. I had to stop listening.

A good first instalment in a 3 part serial.

This is not a stand-alone, and I knew this going in.

I’d classify this as a dark erotic romance – that is because we have a financially and socially desperate heroine who falls low enough to agree to a public auction of her virginity for financial gain. The hero buys her virginity and exclusive possession of her for 1 month. So this is not romantic, but rather, a dark theme. The story is told from the heroine’s point of view and we don’t get much insight into the hero’s mind as he gives very little away, isn’t very outwardly likeable, and you have to read into his actions for clues about his feelings - which the heroine misinterprets regularly. He, ofcourse, takes the virginity he bought. As a reader, I didn’t fall in love with the hero in this first instalment, and I had to take it on trust that he cares, or WILL care for the heroine now that he possesses her. Danger, mystery and secrets abound in the story-line that carry over to the next 2 books, adding interest. The story reminded me of the atmosphere in vintage Anne Stuart dark/erotic stories – a definite compliment. For all these reasons, I classify this story as dark/erotic. If you like that style of story, you will love this.

I listened to this whole trilogy/3 part serial on Audible. I liked the voice of the narrator, but some of her pronunciation threw me off every now and then. For example: ‘implacable’ was pronounced ‘im-PLACE-able’ instead of sounding like ‘im-plack-able’. Perhaps that’s how this and other words are pronounced in the U.S? Cultural differences? A little distracting. Still, I prefer this narrator to some others I have heard. She has a lovely, youthful voice that is perfect for this heroine in her early 20s. Despite my grumbles, I enjoyed her narration.
