Publisher's summary

Walter Scott has three passions: Scotland, poetry, and Mina Stuart. Though she is young and they are from different stations in society, Walter is certain their love is meant to be. For years he has courted her through love letters. She is the sunshine of his soul.

Though Mina shares Walter's love of literature and passionate temperament, it's hard for her to know if she truly loves him or if she has only been dazzled by his flattery. When she meets the handsome and charming William Forbes, her heart is challenged. Who will she choose? But as every poet knows, "the course of true love never did run smooth", and on a windy morning in the lake country, Walter meets Charlotte. At 26, Charlotte Carpenter believes she will never find love. After all, she is a Catholic-born Frenchwoman living in London with a family history shadowed by scandal. Though quiet, practical, and determined to live a life of independence, her heart longs for someone to love her and a place to call home. Passion and promises collide as Walter, Mina, and Charlotte must each decide the course for their futures. What are they each willing to risk to find love and be loved in return?

Rich settings, developed characters, lovely story

A very touching read and wonderful background of beloved writer, Sir Walter Scott. Enjoyed this book very much despite the fact it is not a genre I’m typically drawn to. The narrator does a beautiful French interpretation. Her Scots’ brogue is a bit faltering but overall her soft voice is well matched to this work. Finished it faster than expected as I was drawn into the relationships. Highly recommend.

Great and inspiring love story!

This book was truly wonderful! I loved learning about Walter Scott’s life, and the honest and honorable man he was. I loved hearing the politeness that permeated the conversations and were a deep part of the culture then. I loved learning how Walter fell in real love and learned the difference between infatuation and true love. Very inspiring and fun to listen to! It also made me fall in love with my own husband again. 😍. Thanks Josi for this great book! ❤️

Romantic and Convincing

Much like one would expect a novel by Scott himself, without quite as much humor or ironic social and religious commentary. Anyone who loves Scott owes Josi Kilpack a debt of gratitude.

Great novelization of historical events

Ms. Kilpack did a great job of turning historical events into a novel. She has a nice long conclusion, telling exactly where she made things up and what was real, and what she learned from her research. I recommend this book highly, especially for those who love Scottish history. The narrator did a pretty good job of Scottish accents. Not distracting in the least from the story!

Surprisingly Good!!

I had no idea historical fiction could be so emotionally fulfilling! I thoroughly enjoyed this work and the epilogue and the chapter notes at the end. I wish other historical fiction could be this captivating. Highly recommended!!
