Editorial reviews

The Heiress Companion is a down-to-earth society romance, narrated in a refined British lilt by Ione Butler, that deftly describes three interwoven love stories between Lords and Ladies and lonely spinsters and handsomely men who may or may not be available.

Like all good society stories, there is plenty of pining, passion, subtle sideways glances, misunderstandings, resolutions, and the capturing of the ever-elusive love that these characters seek.

The Heiress Companion is an easy and entertaining fantasy that would perhaps sound great while relaxing at the beach or enjoying the serenity of a quiet Sunday afternoon.

Publisher's summary

Rowena Cherwood did not go around boasting of it, but she had a tidy legacy from her parents. Free to choose the life she wanted, and unwilling to live with her overbearing aunt, she accepted a position as Lady Bradwell's companion.

A spinster of twenty-seven, Rowena gave little thought to marriage - until Lyn Bradwell, Lady Bradwell's long absent son, returned to England. Love was the last thing on Rowena's mind - or Lyn's. But Lady Bradwell, impatient for her companion's happiness and her son's, wondered how long it would be before her companion and her son would open their eyes.

Short and sweet.

Very pleasant read in Georgette Heyer style. And all the more delightful for being so short.

Great performance, too.

I plan to revisit this book again and again whenever I am in need of some light cheering up.

Truly excellent complex and delightful

This truly has the most admirable qualities of a Georgette Heyer novel ... and there is no author of Regency period romance that I admire more than Georgette Heyer ... by saying this, I have given Madeleine Robins the highest praise I have available.

This is my first Madeleine Robins novel, and I am delighted to know there are more ... given the astonishingly fine quality of the plotline and characters and the witty dialogue, all accomplished in the most comfortable and cozy manner, I feel confident that you will enjoy this novel if you enjoy Georgette Heyer's novels.

There is a slight drawback, not in the quality of the narration, which is sensitive and thoughtful, but in the speed of the narration. I solved that easily by setting the speed to .75 of the recorded speed, which returned the narration to the dignified and thoughtful speed that is appropriate to Regency era novels, just like Regency era butlers, of which there is a fine one in this novel. Smiles, please give it a try, I think you'll like it.

A nice story.

This is a light listen, a light romance. Madeleine Robbins is "Georgette Heyer" light. I have looked into getting Robbins' books, as there are a limited number of Georgette Heyer books available. I recommend Robbins' books, if you enjoy light, safe, romances .

Great Fun!

This is a fun read. Nothing too harsh or disgusting, just word play and fun. Read it during a weekend when you want to avoid football.and you'll.be happy.

Great Story but Iffy Narration

Very charming story. The narrator did fairly well with the voices and her pace of reading, BUT there were numerous mispronunciations -even some varying mispronunciations of the same words, that proved quite distracting.

Has potential...

I felt like this novel fell short on many levels. Although the storyline could have been quite captivating, it was never allowed to develop any depth. It was simply a story being told. It felt like the author was up against a timeline and just had to hurry finish the story.
In the beginning, there is some history and background given that gives the reader some sense of a good story to come. However, as the story progresses events unfold without explanation, proof of feelings, or even relatability.
No surprises AT ALL in the plot.
The narrator left much to be desired. She provided no change to the inflection of her voice between characters so it was difficult to follow who said what. The only character she provided a changed voice for was done was one done with a ridiculous nasal sound.
Not worth the time to listen to unfortunately.

Sweet story

The story was sweet but very two dimensional. The narrator on the other hand was weak. She had a fine speaking voice but seemed to be unfamiliar with many words in the English language. She mispronounced so many words throughout the book it was distracting

Bad narration

The story itself was quite entertaining, though the narrator kept mispronouncing words. Personally I can’t like a book if the narration is bad.

Lovely yet predictable

A great escape into the past where simply getting married was a noble woman’s goal. Nice summer reading.

Enjoyable story in the style of Georgette Heyer

I have listened to this book all the way through twice. While the writing is not up to the level of Georgette Heyer and there are occasional anachronisms, I found this to be a fun, enjoyable story. It is certainly more period appropriate than a number of other Regency Romance books I have read. The narrator was adequate. I have tried to listen to some other books by the same author, but have run into the roadblock of the narrators of those books not knowing how to pronounce so many of the words as to make the books unlistenable. I will try reading them instead. This narrator, however, was acceptable enough that I listened to the book twice as part of the audible plus catalog and may go ahead and buy it.
