Publisher's summary

"Don't do it, Annika," he taunted. His eyes were no longer bright and charming, but dark and intense, yet they still twinkled. He was tempting, but was he harmful?

Aspiring rock star Annika Brisby thinks she knows where her life is going until she steps through a broken portal that leaves her stranded in a fae-filled realm of fairies, shapeshifter druids, psychic vampires, and other mythical beings. Unable to return until it's repaired, she's rescued by wood nymphs who believe her sudden arrival is no accident. After being taken in by a prominent family of elves, Annika finds herself struggling to resist the seductive spell of their youngest son, Talvi. Equal parts arrogant and alluring, the notorious heartbreaker seems like the perfect distraction for her homesickness. Her new friends warn her that she'll probably regret ever laying eyes on him, and what begins as a casual fling with a telepathic elf for a lover quickly burns too hot to handle. By the time Annika learns the consequences of their forbidden trysts, Talvi's already under her skin and dangerously close to her heart. But on the journey home she discovers that there's a mountain of secrets that he's not telling her, and Annika can't help wondering who's really in danger.

You'll enjoy this edgy, dark blend of New Adult Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance if you're a fan of Laurell K. Hamilton, Kresley Cole, Donna Grant, Charlaine Harris, Karen Marie Moning, Jeanine Frost, J.R. Ward, and Lynsay Sands.

SHUT UP ALREADY!

This series had so much potential, but it was seriously hampered by the personalities of the main characters. Our heroine is whiny, judgemental and full of herself -- and she treats the insta-love guy like garbage. She is, literally, in another world, but can't think of anything but going home. It's a mistake to place your characters in an exotic local if you don't allow them to acknowledge -- or enjoy -- the differences. If the character is going to act as if everything is mundane, what's the point?

On the other hand, the hero is a douch-bag of epic proportions. He's petulant, spoiled, arrogant, cruel, and loves to brag about all the women he's had. He also enjoys belittling and torturing the woman he claims to love, and constantly lies to her -- when he isn't stomping out in a huff over some slight to his fragile ego. He is the most unlikable hero I've ever read.

By the end of the 2nd book, I wanted to beat them both soundly with a brick.

Cannaday did do a good job with the alternate world, the family, the other worldly creatures, etc, in book 1 -- but all that goes away when Annika goes home in book 2. The screaming queen, the fairy jokes, the unquestioning acceptance of her friends -- without any real discussion -- these aggravated me even as I mourned the gold Cannaday left on the ground.

Instead of showing what this kind of crazy thrill ride could be, we just get more scenes of the brats fighting and calling each other names, while they conducted their relationship with all the maturity of a couple of middle schoolers.

AAArrrrggghhhh!!! Reading these books is like hanging out with a couple you don't particularly like, as they constantly bicker and insult each other, loudly -- and for HOURS.

Nick Cracknell was great, and had this series been worthy of him, it would have been a keeper. Unfortunately, he read the characters exactly as they had been written.

NOT Recommended: Unless you have a strong stomach for star crossed lovers who should have stayed on their own planets.

GREAT Story, GREAT Narrator!!!

Where does The Flame and the Arrow rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book rates in the top 5% of the audio books I've listened to... Within the first few minutes Nick Cracknell sucks you in and has you forgetting he is not actually the characters he's speaking for.

Which character – as performed by Nick Cracknell – was your favorite?

Talvi of course... the ultimate bad boy.... with a sexy accent of course.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There are several very important moment in this book, but the very last scene is the best one!!!

Any additional comments?

I have read and listened to this book, I loved it both ways, and am anxiously awaiting future books.

Sucked into a portal...

Annika may have been the one pulled into a portal to another realm, but I can feel as though I was pulled there with her. The authors words melded perfectly with the narrator's sexy voice to create a magical experience. This is a book that I wanted to listen to from start to finish. From the new realm to the romance, the book was captivating.

I fell in love with our bad boy heartthrob Talvi as I listened to the book. He could definitely be a pain, but his intentions toward Annika felt pure from the beginning. I'm excited to see where their story goes in future books!

This is the kind of book to pick up immediately!

GREAT NARRATION AND A WHOLE 'NOTHER MAGICAL WORLD

Any additional comments?

I was given this book for an honest review from the author, narrator, or publisher.

Good thing this was a long book because there's a whole different parallel world to be described. This isn't one of those wordy "have-to-mention-every-object" scripts but one full of movement, characters and new situations. I get some feel of a YA read but there is graphic sex at the adult level... Not too much though (darn). No heavy violence or language (unless you consider "shit" a no-no.

Despite the lack of dark and gritty confrontational situations that I come to seek in my Bad Boy reads, I rather liked this story. It was fresh and the romance was real, with it's real ups and downs. The entire story kept me in anticipation, waiting to see what else I'd get to discover. Annika was brave and resourceful; not whiny or a stupid-dumb chic. And Talvi really was a bad boy... with a reputation that even I'd have to question. I wish I met him before he met Annika because afterward, he was a good guy forward from the point of our introduction (well, other than tantrums, jealousy and immature reactions).

Narration was wonderful. A slightly British accent, with a not too deep voice. But when he went into different male characters, he pulled off thedeep and gravely just fine. Acceptable female renditions but I will always say that the male/female narration duo is the best.

I think this ranks up there close to Mistborn series.
TWO THUMBS UP.

Oh the Narration makes it all good

What did you love best about The Flame and the Arrow?

The narration and world building

What other book might you compare The Flame and the Arrow to and why?

"Under Different Stars" (Kricket Series by Amy Bartol)--Probably because of there being similar prophecy scenarios, a ruthless bad boy, everyone wants something from Kricket and no one seems apt to maybe clue her in to ANY sort of truth...kinda like Annika.

"Throne of Glass"--Basically because of the large character base, Talvi and Celaena are similar'ish, and Finn annoys me like Chaol.

What does Nick Cracknell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

EVERYTHING...everything!!!!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was a fan of the entire Troll scenario. It wasn't "moving" emotionally per se, but I loved the dynamics.

Love Story between Two Parallel World

The Flame and the Arrow is a sweet romance between Annika and Talvi. Both are from different worlds. One from the human world and the other from the fae world.

Annika is an aspiring rock star, who has been asked by her boyfriend to marry him and discovered that he has never took her seriously to be a rock star. With no directions of what to do, her uncle invited her to France to help with the cooking.

While visiting a small town, Sofia, Annika noticed a man and three women in their twenties. Intrigued by the way they were dressed, Annika followed them into the bookstore. She only found out that they were from Derbedrossivic, before she escaped when one of the women mistakened her for another person.

Annika never expected to see the man and the three women again until she stepped into a portal by accident and to discover that all the portals to the fae world were closing mysteriously. In order to return home, Annika has accepted Talvi, the man she met in the bookstore and who is an elf and the three women to aid her.

While staying in Derbedrossivic, Annika discovered that she has an ancestor who from from the fae world. Her relationship with Talvi grew closer as he continued to court her. Even though she was warned by her new friends that Talvi is a womanizer and a heartbreaker, it was too late to protect her heart from Talvi.

The courtship of Annika and Talvi is so sweet. There are so many clues on how Talvi felt about Annika but Annika kept flying into the wrong conclusions about Talvi. Talvi only revealed what Annika needs to know when she is ready to listen. In Annika's defense, she is scared of what would happen when she returned to her own world. Talvi can't follow her there since he doesn't have a job there and has never been to the States. She is scared that she and Talvi might not have a future in the human world.

I love Talvi for being so smug, confident with a bit of mischief whenever he talked to Annika. He is quite a protective and caring character. There are just so many good qualities about Talvi. From his past of what Annika knew about him, Talvi really grew from the shallow character he was before meeting Annika.

There are so many characters and magical creatures that keep popping in the story. What is amazing about this story, it is able to tell the backgrounds of each characters and that each characters will make the listeners/readers care and love about them.

I especially love the elfin language about the two flowers and the bees. There is a deeper meaning about love in the elfin language.

I am looking forward to the next two books in this series to find out where the next adventures will take Annika and Talvi.

This audiobook is worth listening to, again.

I was given this audiobook by the author and have volunteered to write an unbiased review of the book. I was not compensated or influenced in any way for writing this review.

A great adventure

I love this book! The narrator is also absolutely dynamite. It's a paranormal romance that has great world building, character development, and just the right amount of passion!
