Publisher's summary

For years, Daphne Wentworth, Countess Carrington has loved her powerful, enigmatic husband, despite the fact that they married under less than ideal circumstances. But no more. Finally at her breaking point, Daphne intends to create a scandal so big, her austere husband will have no choice but to divorce her. Except everything goes awry when he surprises her with the last thing she expected.

Sylvester Wentworth, Earl of Carrington, has returned to London for one reason - to seduce his wife. After a near-death experience, he is in need of an heir and means to make his marriage a real one. To his shock, though, his wicked, beautiful countess wants the exact opposite, and he must now do everything possible to entice his countess to stay forever.

The earl in my heart would be a better title...

This was a well written, well performed and well enjoyed regency romance! I cried... and smiled... and totally forgot the world around me for a while. That’s why I listen , after all.

Heat... steamy moments... with a full boil eventually.

Suspend Your Belief and Your Brain for this One

I rarely leave reviews but I had to comment on this particular vacuous morsel. Poorly researched in terms of time period behaviors, expectations, mores, and the difficulty of a divorce. During this time period a divorce was extremely rare and the ramifications would have been devastating to both parties. The main female character besides being fatuous showed no true understanding of her husband's reason for avoiding her. She disparages him for not making any attempts to save the marriage even after she learns of her father's hideous blackmail. She even comments that she wished that her father had not interfered. Seriously? She rationalizes what he did as interference? Again the woman is "daft". Quite frankly, I think anyone forced into a union via the nastiest form of a threat certainly has the right to be angry. The author then finds a way to get the main characters together by using the old trope of "life change after near death experience". I think the hero either lost his mind or moved into an alternate universe. The plot and character behaviors was just not thought out well enough. It relied too much on implausibilities and forced events making it at times jarring and annoying. I apologize to all that loved this story but there is only so much belief I can suspend before I feel I am in an alternate universe with a kind and peaceful Attila the Hun.

Gets better. High Narration - Low Action

This book is more narrative than telling us the action happening. Author would spending 20-30 mins narrating a 5 min conversation... but the author does such a good job with discriptions it didn't really matter. This was truly a well written book and the woman reading it has such a beautiful voice. Only complaint would be that I couldn't tell when a male was speaking after a female.. voice didn't go deeper like I imagined it ahould... still a great book!

Or you could just say you’re sorry

Actions speak louder than words. But, also, words matter. And the words I needed to hear were I’m sorry.

Given their infuriating lack of communication- for six years - you’d think there’d be more of an attempt to communicate during all of the events in this book. But nooo, Daphne spends the entire time doggedly pursuing contrived, nonsensical solutions, like getting a divorce afters six years of marriage, trying to dig up leverage to extort a divorce, or creating a scandal to force a divorce. Say what?! Sylvester spends the entire time assuming the worst in Daphne while attempting to seduce her for an heir … by not taking her to bed. Huh?!

I would have viewed all the contrivances better with him properly groveling at the end, admitting he screwed up, and actually saying the words ‘I’m sorry’ or ‘I was wrong, please forgive me.’ Instead, in the end he informs her that he’ll respect her by honoring her wishes and then striving to be a good friend. Gah! And, she falls for it! Double gah!!

More fun or naughty bits would also have softened the blow from the complete lack of communication. There’s some hankypanky, but the single scene occurs in the final half hour. By then, I was too miffed.

A little plain speaking

While this book is well written and well read it was spoiled for me. I wad terribly frustrated by the fact that if they would only talk to each other this whole situation they're agonizing over could have been avoided.

Great novel!

This story tells a lesson in two people that lacked communication and trust. They learn to work together to resolve their past. SR is brilliant with her steam! Definitely not a wasted credit! 😉

Good choice

I have read and listened to several books by this author and this story is clearly one of the best. Like other books, it is a lot about trust or rather distrust, loneliness and the desire for partnership. The main characters are also mature people with clear ideas about life, morality and the meaning of life.
I would also like to highlight a great narrator.
