Publisher's summary

A taciturn soldier and a social butterfly - is the perfect home worth the price of a marriage of inconvenience?

Blake Montague's draconian temper and clever mind belong on the Continent, decoding French communications. Instead, as the youngest son of a baron, he's terrorizing London ballrooms in search of a wife who will buy the commission he can't afford.

Jocelyn Carrington, after years of smiling through the pain inflicted by an uncaring family, has just inherited a fortune. Now she can buy the special home with an aviary her eccentric younger brother needs - but Blake Montague's family owns it. They offer the house if she will marry their son and prevent him from marching off to war. Except Blake will use her dowry to buy his commission.

How can Jocelyn gain the home of her dreams while keeping alive a courageous man with a bad habit of attracting trouble? Can Blake believe the beautiful Jocelyn might actually free him from his family's manipulations? Can this wary, cynical pair open their hearts to trust in the power of love?

Critic reviews

"Intriguing protagonists, quirky secondary characters, and a surprising plot make for an endearing sequel to...The Wicked Wyckerly." (Publishers Weekly)
"Rice takes her cast of characters - including the naughty French-speaking parrot, Percy - on a passionate, sensual, rib-tickling romance. A master of the nuances of humor, she brings joy, lots of love, and plenty of laughter to this fast-paced, unforgettable second Rebellious Sons story." (Joan Hammond, RT Reviews)
"Every character entertains and satisfies.... It's a sweet, sexy, fun romp with so much heart. I can't wait to read the next book in the series." (Anne Gracie, author of The Accidental Wedding)

Disappointing

What would have made The Devilish Montague better?

If the "hero" could have seen more value in the heroine besides her body. I gave up listening when six hours into the book, the hero is still dismissive of the heroine's talents and abilities.

Has The Devilish Montague turned you off from other books in this genre?

I'm not turned off of this genre (romances) but of this sub-category: angry emotionally wounded man treats woman horribly (emotionally) but eventually her love changes him. (I'm assuming since I won't be finishing this book.)

What about Eliza Jane Cornell’s performance did you like?

Eliza did another wonderful job narrating this book.

What character would you cut from The Devilish Montague?

The hero.

Any additional comments?

I loved the first book in this series. In that book, even though they are complete opposites and he needs to marry someone with money, the hero admires the heroine's talents and abilities (as well as her body). I will give one more book in this series a try but if the rest follow this book's pattern, it seems that The Wicked Wyckerly is a standout gem.

Inventive author is poorly served by poor narrator.

I couldnt finish this book as the reader did not vary her voice at all but raced through the words as if her house was on fire. I even found it hard to follow the story which was turning out to be interesting. Such a shame.

The hero and heroine were really interesting in this story. However,I listen to books because I find the narrator adds so much to the story for me with accents and different people having different voices. This narrator didn’t bother, she might have been reading a newspaper article about the weather. How in the world did this woman become a narrator?

way too cliche

This reads like most other Regency novels... like there was an average format and they followed it to the T. Where is the originality.

disappointing

at first the story was different enough to capture my interest, but it’s fast pace and lack of actual interactions and conversations just became muddling and cause for eye rolling. however, the narration is atrocious. it sounds like cornell is forcing an unnatural accent. her voices are inconsistent and often silly. her tone is frequently annoying. i wouldn’t be able to listen to an entire book narrated by cornell even if the story was better.

Okay

I found this a bit boring at times and not romantic. The actual deed didn’t come until the end of the book and was rushed and not sensual. The narrator wasn’t bad but was rushed at times. The male voices could’ve been better.

Romance on the Spectrum!!!

Delightful and charming. Unique in it's characters. This is a romance of spectrum people w special brains in a time when such things aren't thought to exist. It both shines a light on the modern spectrum romance reader while believably includes a spectrum romance story solidly in the genre.
