It's 1890. Called by God, 19-year-old Soonie Eckhart travels to an illegal Comanche and Kiowa settlement in North Texas to become a teacher for the children in hiding.
Despite her Comanche roots, she finds many in the group, including a volatile young man named Lone Warrior, refuse to accept her.
After a chance encounter in the hills with a band of dangerous men, Soonie must draw on the deepest parts of her faith and courage to survive.

Lovely Story of Heritage and Faith
Recommend the Book over the audio
Ms. Pennington has a very soft and innocent narration. I can imagine her narrating a children's book. Stark articulation made it more of a reading versus storytelling. It just didn't fit with this story. Pauses a little too long. Poor editing. Distracting lip smacking, swallowing, wind bursts on the "k' sound, dog barking, chair squeaks and a slamming of a door. At one point the narrator sounded like she had a cold. (I did not listen with earbuds, but with a player). Ms. Pennington has a nice male and female voice. Playing with the tempo would have made the narration more interesting.
I liked the story. It was very sweet. I didn't like the narration. I enjoyed the historical references about the Comanche and soldiers/white man (general interaction, prejudices, traditions). I could picture this on the hallmark channel. I received a copy via audiobook boom in exchange for an unbiased review.
