Publisher's summary

The Kingdom of Askara has been torn apart by conflict for centuries, where humans exist as subservient beings to their werewolf masters. Legend says it will only be able to heal itself when an Alpha King and a pure omega are mated and crowned together, but a pure omega hasn't been born in over a thousand years. Luca is an Alpha-heir eagerly awaiting the choosing ceremony on his 25th birthday and the gifts granted by whichever omega he mates. His small pack is destitute due to the decisions of its ruling council, but being only an Alpha-heir, he has no authority to challenge them. Not until now - this moment he has waited a long time for. Kit grew up as a street-rat, an unlicensed human who would never be more than a slave for whichever master owns him. Then one day he came across a young Alpha-heir, attacked and dying of poison, and found out their fates were suddenly entwined. Luca needs to take over his pack and save his people. He cannot afford to be distracted. But when he meets Kit, he develops abilities indicating he is not just a pack Alpha, but the King his world has needed for a thousand years. Is Kit really the cause of Luca's newfound power, the true mate he needs? How is it possible when the young man isn't even a werewolf, and as merely a human, a mating is not only forbidden, but for Kit, a sentence of death?

The best MPREG book I've read so far!

This is a great Alpha/Omega book. The characters and the landscape are described in such detail that you can picture it unfolding right before your eyes.

Kit, a human slave has seen it written in the stars that his mate is a powerful Alpha, however unlikely that may be. Luca, the alpha in question is ready for his choosing ceremony so he can take a mate when he finds the young man who saved his life all those years ago.

Realizing that Kit is his mate and a human leaves Luca reeling. Luca must scramble to understand what is going on and keep Kit safe at all cost. Their world is in turmoil and it is up to the new Alpha King and his human Omega mate to make it a better place for all of them.

The story was amazing. The narration was stellar. Joel Leslie made me feel every emotion the characters were feeling. Every time Luca did something stupid I wanted to punch something. When Kit was devastated, I wanted to cry for him. I haven't come across too many audiobooks that have made me feel this much.

If you enjoy Alpha/Omega or MPREG stories you can't go wrong with this one.

1 star for story, three for narration, average 2.

I honestly take no joy in writing bad reviews, especially of books that make me want to rant because I was so displeased with them. It's hard to rein my hate in enough to express my concerns, without just sounding like a harridan. And The Alpha King is one such book.

Even if I overlook a lot of the lack of world-building by accepting this as part of an established Omegaverse, this book is full of plot holes and inconsistencies. Example: One character overhears part of a conversation and illogically jumps to the conclusion that the other has betrayed him. He then reacts badly, doing something public and cruel; we're talking flat out abusive.

Now this trope is cliched and overused as it is. It is also shoehorned in, as the conclusion jumped to barely makes sense from the conversation heard. But the two characters are TELEPATHICALLY bonded. True, they can't read each other's minds, just talk and get a general sense of the others feelings. But it still shouldn't be possible for one to a) not know the other loves him with his whole heart, b) miss the lack of betrayal in his partner, c) be so cruel to the person he supposedly loves above all else. It makes no sense. Additionally, as a reader I then had to contend with, every time the character said how he loves his partner and would never hurt him, I was forced to call BS, because he had already shown that he obviously would with very little (basically imagined) provocation. And his doormat of a mate would take him back without even an attempt at apology.

The most grievous issue for me however, was that the book is supposed to be about a werewolf who is to become the Alpha King, you know One King to Rule Them All, uniting the disparate packs and freeing the enslaved humans and creating peace with the rebel humans. But the vast majority of the book is dedicated to things like party planning, and jewelry design, and stupid jealousies and delivery of children that is only notable because they are coming from a man. All these big, heavy important issues and the book focuses on the minutia.

It managed to complete an actual story arc only because the characters coincidentally ran into and effortlessly charmed all the people they need to make it happen. It stretched incredulity far, far, far, far, far too far. And this without even touching the politics necessary to make some of the horribly treated, enslaved humans dedicate themselves loyally to the main character, who lets not forget is a werewolf, i.e., their oppressor. (This is ignored for the whole book.)

There is also the small issue of how did Luca, born and raised same as all the other werewolves, come to possess all his modern liberal morals? Why does he, and only he, seem to want to free the humans? Why does he, and only he, see women as equals? Why does he, and only he, see a problem with child labor?

I could go on, I had so many issues with this book: the way rape is volleyed about every time a villain shows up, the utter predictability of it, the cliches, etc. But I'll stop. This book and I didn't get along. Mechanically, the writing seemed fine (or as well as I could tell in a audiobook) and the narration was ok. I, personally, didn't care for some of the accents (Why were there so many?), but that's a subjective thing.

Note: I received an audible code for the purposes of review. I chose to listen and review it, however.

Horribly written

This book started out good, except for the narrator, but quickly went down hill. first, Joel sounds like a deadpan pedophile whos trying to pull off a fake western accent. second, Kit was a SLAVE and yet has no lasting trauma or PTSD from a life spent being beaten. Third, this story has every cliché known to man. Fourth, I've read Fanfiction written better then this. The amount of times Luka' name was written in was so annoying it got to the point where I was counting it. I got half way through before giving up, I tried, really tired. I so wanted this book to be my next favorite, and I might try again with a physical copy but I cant take the narration anymore

Such a great start to a series!!

What does Joel Leslie bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Joel Leslie did a great job with all of the characters in the book! He made the mother's voice so perfectly grating that I disliked her immediately. Kit was so sweet and that came across in the voice that Joel Leslie was able to make for him.

Any additional comments?

Kit and Luca have had to deal with so much pain in their lives. Kit knew that Luca was meant to be his, but had to give him up because it wasn't time for him and Luca to be together at that time. Kit had to go back to a life of constant pain and struggle. When Luca and Kit finally meet the connection is almost instant! The power that Luca gains is enough to show that he is the Alpha King that is needed to unite the other nations. There are so many issues that come up, and they put a strain on Kit and Lucas' relationship. Most of it lack of communication on both their parts, but I am so glad that they are able work through them and love each other.

I love the whole thing!!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Alpha King to be better than the print version?

The audio just made the book even better. Joel Leslie just had a way of making a book so much better without taking away from how the author writes the book. He has the characters come alive and I love every minute of it.

What about Joel Leslie’s performance did you like?

I love everything but I had one part that I actually had yo stop.listening for a little bit. He just made that part of the story so real that I was feeling the embarrassment and the hurt and all I wanted to do so tell at the characters to talk to each other. I love it in the book but I Joel Leslie's performance made it have more feeling then just reading it.

Any additional comments?

I love Victoria Sue for her amazing book and for Joel Leslie for just bring the story to life.

good story, different take on shape shifter

overal good story. but i have two issue.
in the middle of the book the main character now has to go on a journey, unless i missed something the importance of this journey was not revealed until he was about to set out. i forgave the author and just went with it.

the end of the book is the other issue, it just stops. all that he wanted to accomplish , the unity of all the packs that was supposed to be the kings job . the book seems to have been cut off.

Mpreg! I love it!

This looks like another amazing start to a fascinating series!

If you’re a fan of the author or the genre (mpreg) you’re probably familiar with Victoria Sue’s Sirius Wolves series (reviewed here: ) This is very similar in style and feel and has a lot of those same elements. It’s vaguely historical but also dystopian so possibly future? It was hard to tell, but most of it feels like the past.

We have a ruling class of shifters who enslave humans and two destined lovers who will “save the world”.

What I liked: I loved the amazing new powers Luca and Kit tap into upon bonding. I loved the “predictions”. I loved their relationship and commitment once it was established.

What I didn’t like: The world building. It was overwhelming. There were names and places and rules and all sorts of information literally dumped on me in the beginning and throughout the book. Even with all that, I was still sometimes confused about motivations of key players and definitely lost track of all the people. I didn’t like the fact that most of the conflict between our MCs revolves around them not talking to one another about how they feel (even when they share a mind link!). That made me crazy! Most of their angst was a “misunderstanding” that could have resolved quickly had they just said what they were feeling.

I think that fans of mpreg will want to read this, as will fans if the Sirius series. If you’re new to mpreg, this is a good book to try because Victoria Sue is a good writer and her stories use mpreg, but that isn’t the sole reason for her MCs to get together.

I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Audio

Is there anything Joel Leslie can’t narrate? I mean it! He’s just so versatile and has so many talents! He’s truly a joy to listen to. He asked me the other day if I got tired of his voice (joking of course) and I told him that was impossible because he voices all his characters differently and it’s not like listening to the same person over and over.

This story is a great example of this because there is such a variety of characters and he moves between them effortlessly.

Highly Recommended
