This historical romance written by Parris Afton Bonds and narrated by Laura Jennings was a real treat. Maddie was a Scottish girl that had been captured in America by Indians and escaped years later with her half-breed son. Gordon Halpern is a man who seeks Maddie out to help him rescue his wife from the same band of Indians that had held her. Maddie agrees to help him after her nine year old son runs away to find his father. They battle the elements, the soldiers in the area and the attraction they feel for each other. The time and surroundings are described so well that it's very hard not to lose yourself in the book. It is very well written with strong characters.
The voice of Laura Jennings is extremely easy to listen to and the different accents, tones and inflections for the characters were superb. I feel that the experience was richer for having listened to it vs. just reading the book. I'll be looking for more to experience from this duo.

This is one of those stories that you listen to that stays with you for days. I was at times challenged to keep track of the characters but it was a beautiful story. Maddie Macalister with her Scottish brogue she is described as a self-willed, wild creature who is rebellious and a proud heathen! What a woman! I love her from the start. The daughter of a wealthy engineer, she is of childlike stature and suffer deep emotional scars from the years of captivity by a cruel Apache warrior. She has a half breed son by him that she loves dearly and she is fiercely protective of him. She absolutely refuses to give up on him. Albert runs away to try to be with his father.
She accepts the offer from the boxer Gordon Halpern to find her son and we are taken along for a wild ride which lasts for 10 says but feels like a lifetime. As the story unfolds, we learn the secrets of Mattie ‘s past and why she is the way she is. Gordon Halpern is also quite a study. He is a fastidious man with secrets of his own. To complete the traveling party, the guide is a very strange, pastor spouting off his prophecies. He has been in captivity with Mattie and she saved his life in the past and when I head how she did it I am still squirming. The three make quite a team and they encounter peril, danger, betrayal and oh so much more. The author takes her time slowly peeling away the layers from the characters. Pay attention. It is easy to get lost. I had to listen to some sections a second time.
This book touches on some very harsh topics. There are very graphic and vicious scenes of violence and death. However, the language is beautiful. I bookmarked quite a few sections because it captured so exquisitely the essence of life and survival. I love the vivid descriptions of the mountainous terrain and the dessert. The romance was sweet.
The narrator did a superb job. I love the accent used for Mattie. It was consistent to the very end and brought to life the spunk and wittiness of Mattie’s character.
I will definitely look for more books by this author and narrator.
