This book starts off intense with the history that Sutton and Emrys share.
You can’t help but feel for them and all the suffering they have to go through. Their story isn’t for the faint of heart it is rough and raw and takes a toll on both of them.
Healing isn’t easy no matter the attraction; I very much enjoyed Sutton and his gruff ways. My heart hurt for him being who he is he doesn’t like weakness and he has to hit bottom before he can become the man he wants to be.
Em needs to forgive and learn to heal from the inside out. It a sweet story of finding yourself and knowing and going after what you want. I very much was rooting for these two. Their journey isn’t easy but it’s necessary.
I liked the narration but I didn’t love it. I didn’t feel much emotion for either narrator, it felt more like they were just reading the words and not giving much emotion or inflection to their voices. You get used to it; it is not terrible just okay.
*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

I was gripped by the opening of this book. I'm not a fan of abuse or evil people, so parts of this story were difficult to listen to for me. The book is full of vivid imagery, mystery, murder, deceit, hope, reconciliation, forgiveness, and love. I thought both of the narrators did an excellent performance and added the right suspense, tension and emotions.
This book is both part of a series and a standalone listen. It does not end in a cliffhanger. I would listen to more books by both the author and narrators. I requested a review copy of this audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. The main vibe I took away from this rollercoaster book, was learn to love.

Wow I loved Retreat and couldn't wait to get my hands on Shelter I needed more. This book is fantastic Jay manages to rip every single emotion from you. The suspense had me on the edge of my seat, and the emotion in Jays writing is breathtaking I had tears, I had laughter but most of all I have the need for more I can't wait for the next book in the series. This definitely deserves more than 5 stars congratulations on another fantastic read. I highly recommend this book.
