Publisher's summary

New Orleans belongs to me. You don't know my name, but I control everything you see - and all the things you don't. My reach knows no bounds, and my demands are always met. I didn't need to loan money to a failing family distillery, but it amuses me to have them in my debt. To have her in my debt. She doesn't know she caught my attention. She should've been more careful. I'm going to own her. Consume her. Maybe even keep her. It's time to collect what I'm owed. Keira Kilgore, you're now the property of Lachlan Mount.

This made me angry and didn’t really end - have to buy next in series to find out conclusion

Book ends on a cliffhanger and definitely not s standalone book. However, although that is annoying about this book that’s not what angers me. Mount coerces her to have sex with him to pay off her deceased’s husbands debt and threatens if she doesn’t people she cares for will die. He torments her sexually but still not by choice and when she is on the brink of being defeated and screams for him to just do it (e.g., to get it over with and get her release) Mount thinks he’s not raping her because she begs for it. The fact that he kidnaps her and controls her every move doesn’t occur to him as being abusive. Then she is slowly missing him even though she can’t stand him. I’m angered at the book implying a woman isnt raped if she eventually enjoys the sex act after being kidnapped and forced to do things she would never had agreed to. I’m angered at the message this sends to male readers permitting them to take what they want because she will eventually like it. I’ve enjoyed other books this author has written but this one feels like it has crossed the line from control to downright abuse but finding ways to justify this abuse. Also, Mount’s voice sounded weak for the character he was playing.

Not my fav..

I normally love Meghan March but this story was off for me. I really disliked the Narration. I didn't connect to the female lead at all, Mount is weird, and I don't think that the whole captive thing is a turn on. It's one thing to have an alpha, it's a whole other thing to have a psychopath threatening everyone you love unless you... Comply with every demand? Not hot. Horrible narration didn't help. What ever happened to attraction, happenstance, teamwork to bring people together? Why all this twisted love hate and weaponized masculinity?

Great story narration Could use some work

I enjoyed the story but the when the female narrator tried to do the Lachlan's voice she often made him sound like he was mentally slow. Unfortunately there was a enough dialogue that it was distracting and made listening less enjoyable.

Meghan March is an auto buy for me always and she didn't disappoint with this book. I will say this book felt very angry for the most part though, I was hoping at some point these characters would be a little less volatile toward each other but I do see it coming in part 2!

Mount comes across as a ruthless, angry, demanding man but honestly I felt his softer side a lot more than I felt hers. You can see he is obviously protecting himself from her. Keira is protesting a little too much I think. She is obviously into him but she can't let even a sliver of that show. He is forcing her to be in his life and she is pushing back every second of the way. The sex was hot and the "ending" has a twist.

I know I sound like a broken record with this comment but I would love to just get the whole book in 1 piece instead of cutting it in half and releasing it as 2 books. I understand when this is done because the book is too long but this is not even 6 hours. I personally would rather wait for a little longer and get a full story but that is just me. Not that this stops me from buying two 1/2 books every time a Meghan March book is released ;)

The narration was good, I haven't heard Grace Grant in awhile and I enjoy her work. Joe Arden was a tease in this book since he only had a few small chapters but they were great.

Disappointing narration! Blown away by the story.

Loved the storyline! Struggled listening till the very end. While I enjoyed the very few chapters of real male narration, I really hated the faked one, which by the way was to freaking much!

Don't take me wrong, female narration was great, however when it comes to pretending to be other characters, especially the main male character is what killed it for me!

Thank God for authors that delivered best quality for their fans and have done real dual narration instead of what I got here.

I'm freaking loving this series to much, so my next installment it'll be just read. No more audio for me!! This is just my personal opinion!!

Joe Arden was barely on this audiobook and was magnificent, for what I felt cheated.

Okay

The Beneath series was my absolute favorite and I was disappointed with this first book. It did not start to get good until the end and I agree with others there is no need to make this three books and charge us triple the price.
I also missed Sebastian and Andi, Sebastian has the perfect voice for an Alpha male and I did not feel that with Joe.
I think this book was to much on Keira side and not enough from Mount's point of view.
I will listen to the next two books, because I am curious to see the ending.

KILLER read! Great start to the series!

Hang on to your seats, folks! This story is definitely darker and grittier than previous Meghan March books. There’s more than meets the eye and this story quickly begins unfolding. I was drawn into Kiera’s plight. She has been dealt a shitty hand and is trying to keep her head above water. Just when she thinks it can’t get any worse, it does.

Even though he’s an asshole (albeit a hot, sexy asshole), Lachlan Mount is raw masculinity. I️ want to know him and to learn more about him. And his dirty mouth ...🔥

I enjoyed the way he was with Kiera and the little snippets of him she saw. She was defiant as hell and the only one gutsy enough to his face. I loved their interactions! This story had some interesting twists and get ready for this ending .... make sure you have Defiant Queen ready!

Disappointed....

I was very surprised by the storyline. It gave me deja vu in regards to a million other books out there with the same type of characters and same plot line. I couldn’t finish the book and will definitely not be purchasing the next two in this series.

Great story by Meghan March, as usual

As usual Meghan March comes through with this romantic/suspense. This first book sets the foundation for a great continuing story. This story kept my attention from beginning to end. Meghan weaves a very detailed story that sucks you in and doesn't let got. The narrators were excellent. Great team for this effort.

Really great!!

I am a big fan of this writer, and the Mount trilogy doesn't let me down. I seriously don't know how to wait for the last part, and suspect that Meghan Marsh has an evil side that likes torturing her readers with the suspense. Luckily part three is released on my birthday, and oh what a glorious day it will be.
