Publisher's summary

From beloved historical romance author Marion Chesney comes the second installment in the Regency Intrigue series.

With little to live on but her romantic daydreams - which frequently starred the dashing Marquess of Fleetwater - Jean Lindsay lived a rather dismal life with her nasty, drunken uncle.

Jean was always the object of ridicule, that is, until news of her unexpected inheritance spread. Suddenly her worn dresses became "quaint" and her forthright manner turned magically to "charming", but to Jean's horror, someone wanted her dead!

With the marquess nearby to save her pretty neck, Jean felt quite safe... and quite smitten. As for her hero... how had an unsophisticated child from a Scottish manse turned his head and his heart askew?

Good one! Funny and relateable.

same complaints with the reader. Ms Dore is atrocious! mispronunciation abound. where are the producers? why do they not edit out the mistakes? why does she read like she's reading a dictation? she does not read incohesive thoughts and complete sentences. It's like she's never read the book before but the story is funny and cute. one of my favorites. although there are some cringe-worthy moments.

Very long

Seemed to drag on and on. I like these kinds of stories but the two main characters might be better off without each other.

Disappointed

I was looking forward to reading this book but became very irritated with the two main characters. The author has made the main female character a feather brain & her live interest isn’t much better. The story line was weak and I found myself becoming very irritated the further the story progressed.

Not her best

You can skip this one. Not M C Beaton’s best by far. Only 1 I didn’t like

juvenile, at best

this story had all the charms of one written and performed by a 13 year old girl in the throws of adolescent passion for her first Beau and there was drama enough for the most ardent drama queen

Persistent daydreaming irritating.

This is not up to Beaton's standard. The daydreams should have ended quickly and lover's issue was like clicking "replay". All in all rather boring.

2nd Worst Book

I have listened to MANY of Ms. Chesney’s books and I still really like her writing (overall) but this is the second worst book of hers that I pushed myself to get through. I’ll need to check the date each book was written.
This book is not worth the time and effort.

Smiled through most of the book

I enjoy this author. The creativity in her expressions made me laugh out loud at times. Characters such as “Frank” made me grin. I could see with my minds eye as this heavily pregnant woman picked up her swollen belly and ran. The story had just enough suspense and intrigue to keep me listening

Secondhand embarrassment and no real resolution

Jean does the most embarrassing things, caught up in daydreams and never coming up with reasonable explanations for her behavior - if she tries to defend herself at all. The marquess is a hot and cold flirt who is constantly either acting like he's trying to seduce Jean rather than woo her, courting other women to make Jean jealous, or courting other women because he has decided, for a time, that Jean is unworthy of him. He does a lot to keep her safe from the machinations of those who want to kill her, but every time those schemes make Jean's sanity look questionable, he either asks her to keep it quiet or blatantly ignores how rumors come up questioning whether she might be insane. In the end, after he finally drives her to confront him in frustration and she is ousted from society, she somehow accepts him immediately when he comes to propose to her, no excuses or apologies given.
Not a great follow-up to the previous book in the series.

Formulaic

When MC Beaton is good, she is delightful. This story never rises above the formulaic and the episodes keeping the lovers apart seem more and more forced, as though she is going through a checklist.

The characters are not anything special and really don't develop throughout the story. She is a typical ingenue and he is a snob. Only his friends Freddie and Lady Frank rise above the cookie cutter mold. The villains are utterly forgetable.

What truly makes this title unlistenable is Charlotte Anne Dore's narration. She is stilted, pauses in weird places and has a tendency to over pronounce her words.

Try something else.
