fun story, but....

it was typical, fluffy fun--enjoyable and light. However, I did have problems with the narration. I've listened to Nicole Poole in other audiobooks and really enjoyed her, so I blame the producer or director of this particular book. Every time she paused to take a breath, you hear the sharp inhale. It's really jarring, since it continues throughout the entire read. You should definitely listed to the sample and decide whether it's going to bother you.

Second chance love with a ghostly twist...

Not Another Bad Date is part of a series (Writers friends). Not all of the titles of the series are available as audiobook but this is the right order:
Sex, Lies, and Online Dating (Writer Friends 1)- not audiobook
I'm In No Mood For Love (Writer Friends 2)- not audiobook
Tangled Up In You (Writer Friends 3) Audiobook available
Not Another Bad Date (Writer Friends 4) Audiobook available

This book can be read as a stand alone but it's better to read in order so that you can enjoy catching up on the lives of the previous couples. This is just another great book by Rachel Gibson. Romantic, hot, funny! I just love a lost love story! Adele and Zach dated in college but Zach's ex-girlfriend tells him she's pregnant so he marries her and Adele is heartbroken. Fast forward 14 years and Zach's wife dies (there's a secondary story about the ghost of the ex-wife being on limbo, which happens to be Walmart and that's kind of weird). Adele and Zach find each other again and then the magic begins.

Narration: Nicole Poole did a very good job with this book. Great male voices and you could always tell the different characters apart. There was a bit of background noise but it didn't take away from the story. I enjoyed every minute of this listen :)

Very Good Contemporary Romance

Not Another Bad Date was a very good contemporary romance. Adele hasn't had much luck in the dating department for years, until she sees her ex-boyfriend Zack. But he hurt her in the past, so she is reluctant to fall in love with him again. However, the attraction is still there, so when these two get together, the sparks do fly. I liked the way their relationship develops slowly, and we really do get to know the characters. My one complaint is that the narrator's breath should have been edited out. After a while I did get used to it, but I would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't been there. Otherwise, this was a very good, very easy going romance.

FINALLY Rachel Gibson on Audible!!!

I love Rachel Gibson books and was thrilled to finally find a couple on Audible. This book is everything I enjoy in chick lit: funny, smart, good character development and not overly cheesey (just enough to keep it light).

There is a little more to this book than just boy meets girl (again) but also how life goes on after first loves fail. As soon as the book ended, I wanted to start it over and listen again! Great reader too!!!

Narrator gasps for breath.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I'm having a really hard time finishing the book due to the narrators inability to breathe quietly. At the end of nearly every sentence it's sounds as if she is taking a deep breath before going underwater. It's a shame the editor or sound technician couldn't have removed the problem because her voices and cadence are pretty good. Rachel Gibson's stories are cute and fluffy perfect for when you want to escape into an idyllic world but I'm not sure if I can bring myself to finish this one.

Yeah, Rachel Gibson!!

This story is romantic and touching while staying fun and intriguing. It is sweet and has some interesting twists. As another reviewer pointed out the narrator does breathe. It could be annoying, except for the fact that the story is so great that you might not even notice! Read all stories from Rachel Gibson, she is the best!

I Really Needed the Laugh....

Would you listen to Not Another Bad Date again? Why?

Yes I would listen again. This story was great. I didn't realize this book was a part of a series although the books are individual you learn about some of the other characters that are referenced and how they got to their "love".

What did you like best about this story?

At first I started listening and thought "oh my, audible screwed up this isn't the book I downloaded. It doesn't match the description at all." The book starts off strange (in a good way) and then turns out really awesome. I love how sometimes you have to go "home" to find yourself. The story (other than a few instances) seems very real, like this could happen to your best friend.

What does Nicole Poole bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Nicole Poole made me feel what Adele was going through and what she went through in the beginning. She made my heart break and beat out of my chest with anticipation.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes this book was one I wanted to listen to all in one sitting...you want to know how it is going to work itself out and what is in store for everyone.

Cute by wimpy ending

Not Another Bad Date by Rachel Gibson is a lighter romance, albeit with a hot alpha male (Zach) as the hero. Ms Gibson does a great job with the characters, including Zach's daughter and Adele's niece, Kendra. It was cute, snappy and a fun listen but I was ultimately let down by the short and convenient wrap up-Ms Gibson had a great plot but didn't make the most of it. I liked the narrator (Nicole Pool) and thought she did a great job with the various voices and accents. Would I listen again? Maybe. But I'll have to rewrite the ending in my head. I'm a fan of hot alpha males and prefer a little more grit in my stories; I'm taking two stars off for the weak ending and the mystical element that distracted from the story more than it added.

Poorly Done

I don't know whether this title falls into genuine chick lit or romance because it really isn't either one. Back in college Adele Harris fell in love with football star Zach. He dumps her to marry his old girlfriend, Devan, and breaks Adele's heart. Through a series of circumstances they meet up again in their hometown where Adele learns Devan, died three years earlier.

The plot sounds like tried and true chick lit. But Gibson then adds a fantasy piece. Devan's ghost, who hates Adele, needs to earn a place in heaven and every so often gets to bestow a gift to someone on earth. The problem with this particular subplot is that we see it at the beginning and then never hear from Devan again until much later in the book. We don't really understand the gift piece until the second appearance of Devan when we're finally able to piece it together. The idea of the ghost is funny, but I'm not sure it belongs in this book. It would have worked better if Devan appeared more frequently. Gibson ties up the fantasy in the end, but it's so much later that it's not relevant.

When there are three hours left in the book, Gibson goes into lots of intimacy details between Adele and Zach. It's not romance and some would consider it porn. A primary problem is it's horribly written. It's full of repetitive phrases, cliches, standard passages and the like. After thirty minutes of one sexual session, the reader is relieved it's over. But not for long. Ten minutes later the reader is in for another thirty minutes of this garbage. It's nothing but filler and doesn't add any plot value. Nuances would have worked just as well. If it were well written, I can see the appeal for the graphics for many readers. But Gibson has a lot to learn about writing sexual intimacies.

As far as the writing in the rest of the book, it's equally poor. The characters are just north of cardboard. They are stereotypic and dull. Gibson writes the teenager characters much better than the adults.

The narrator does not improve anything. She is not exceptional. She does okay differentiating the characters, but there isn't any pop to her narration.

The plot had potential and I was disappointed it didn't live up to what it could have been. This is the first book I've purchased by this author and I'm not apt to buy another.

Cute and light and fun

This isn't the book you want if you are in the mood for some deep soul searching. But if a fun, playful love story with likable characters and some semi-steamy love scenes (that don't cross the boundries of taste, but still have some heat) are what you are in the mood for, pick this up. Jennifer Crusie is still my favorite in this genre, but this book was a good non-Crusie.
