Publisher's Summary

On the run from her former employer, Tess knows that she's vulnerable on her own amongst the Elder Races. That's why she decides to audition to become the human attendant of a powerful Vampyre of the Nightkind demesne. But while her position affords her the safety she seeks, her protector turns out to be more than she bargained for.
Xavier del Torro, the right-hand man of the Nightkind King, is both terrifying and alluring. While his true nature frightens Tess, she can't ignore the appeal of his innate sense of integrity and self-restraint. Thrown into Xavier's world, Tess must quickly learn to navigate the dangers - both to her life and to her heart. But the biggest threat comes from her own past.

Can't stand this woman!

Oh, Thea Harrison, what on earth were you thinking? I own every book and novella and short story in this series, and every time you release a new novel I start from the beginning and read them again. Fantastic series. But think of the wonderful strong women characters you've created: Pia, Carling, Niniane, and Grace? A now you give us this total spoiled ninny called Tess. I can't stand this woman! I'm eight hours into this book, I know the big event is coming to be followed by the happy ever after, but I'm not sure I can make it. Why oh why would an ancient, rich, ripped, sexy vampire want this selfish twit? Argh!!!

Okay seriously, if you are a fan of this series you'll absolutely want to get this book and you'll most likely enjoy it. I'm much intrigued by the story and the other characters as is usual but I have to skip over Tess's dialog. Much harder to do in audio than in print but it can be done. Looking forward to your next book Thea. I'm thinking you'll have this out of your system in time for the next story.

Probably my least favorite book yet.

This book is a bit of a disappointment, I have high expectations from Thea Harrison. The book wasn't bad but if this had been the first one of the series I would have had my doubts about reading any more. Overall I would rate it 3.5 stars due to the fact I love the other books. Four hours into the story and it's going on and on about training and the heroines fear of vampires, no real plot. It was a little overkill and I wanted more romance and adventure like the other books. The characters are boring and Tess is a weak character who considers all vampires as monsters for way too long into the book. Tess was afraid of Xavier for most of the book and suddenly she is practically jumping him. I didn't feel the slow build up that was intended because Xavier was gone most of the time Tess was at his house. It wasn't until about six hours into the story that the book picked up some with the confrontation with the Djinn but that too was anticlimactic. This book missed the mark for me, fortunately I'm a huge fan of the series so I will be reading more from this author. Still the writing was good, only the story needs more substance. Probably the last two hours were the best part of the whole book. The Vampyre stories are my least favorite in the series, for me the Wyr stories are the best. Same narrator as the rest of the series, she does a good job.
