Publisher's Summary

Lady Alice approached the fearsome Warrior who had swept into Lingwood Manor like a storm. Dark and forbidding, with hair as black as midnight and eyes of molten amber, Hugh the Relentless seemed aptly named. Yet to Alice, adept at driving off suitors and handling her insufferable relatives, Sir Hugh was not someone to dread, but the answer to her dreams. He had come for the mysterious green crystal, and would be greatly displeased to learn that it was no longer in her possession. But Alice was certain Sir Hugh could be coaxed into a deal that would benefit them both. In return for a dowry large enough to free Alice and her brother from the grasp of their conniving uncle, she would lend her powers of detection to Sir Hugh's knightly skills and together they would recover his treasured stone. With a tongue as sharp as a dagger, the flame-haired Alice filled Hugh with fury...and a growing fascination. He accepted her terms, with one alteration: Alice must agree to a temporary betrothal and spend the winter in Hugh's great stone fortress, Scarcliffe Keep. The bargain is struck and the adventure begins. But Sir Hugh's lifelong enemy is plotting against them, stirring up a whirlwind of treachery that threatens their fragile alliance.

Not unabridged.

I liked the book but was also disapointed that it was abridged. I love Amanda Quick so I really could have listened to more of this book.

I love Amanda Quick's novels, and this one was no exception. The narrator did a wonderful job and the music was perfectly timed. I was a little dissappointed when I realized that this audiobook was abridged. The title said "unabridged" and I naturally trusted that. Abridged novels tend to feel just a little hollow, not quite living up to the fullness of the story. That is why I gave this audiobook a three. Otherwise, I would have given it a five.

Feeling Cheated

What would have made Mystique better?

I suggest having the audio read the entirety of the book. What you currently have is barely half the book. The animosity between Lady Alice and Monk Calvert was completely missed throughout the whole telling.

Would you ever listen to anything by Amanda Quick again?

Unlikely as the audio is most likely not the full story.

Would you be willing to try another one of Suzanne Bertish’s performances?

What character would you cut from Mystique?

None. The characters and story from the book directly is just fine.

Any additional comments?

Just to confirm, it is NOT the story itself that I don't like. The Amanda Quick book is one of my favourites. What I DIDN'T like was the fact the audio skips entire section of the book in order to create a 3 hr audio. If you are going to turn a great story into an audio, do it properly and in full!
