Publisher's summary

In the small mountain town of Amorea, it's stretching toward autumn of 1954. The memories of a world at war are fading in the face of a prosperous future. Doors are left unlocked at night, and neighbors are always there to give each other a helping hand.

The people here know certain things as fact:

Amorea is the best little town there is.

The only good commie is a dead commie.

The Women's Club of Amorea runs the town with an immaculately gloved fist.

And bookstore owner Mike Frazier loves that boy down at the diner, Sean Mellgard. Why they haven't gotten their acts together is anybody's guess. It may be the world's longest courtship, but no one can deny the way they look at each other.

Slow and steady wins the race, or so they say.

But something's wrong with Mike. He hears voices in his house late at night. There are shadows crawling along the walls and great clouds of birds overhead that only he can see.

Something's happening in Amorea. And Mike will do whatever he can to keep the man he loves.

Perfect combination of author and narrator

I’ve read this novel three times, twice along with Kirt Graves' narration. Each time I’ve read it, I’ve come away marveling at TJ Klune's ability to craft a story that's emotionally true and totally engaging. Kirt's narration Is powerfully on point, bringing TJ's words and characters to life. He has a way of conveying strong emotions in a subtle, believable way. I can’t praise his narration enough.

Fantastic Story!

Once again, this author proves why he is one of my all time favorite mm romance writers.

I absolutely love Mike and my heart broke for Greg but the overall story shrouded in this “Twilight Zone” type of mystery not only kept my interest but the narrator, though a bit young sounding did a fabulous job bringing Amoura or whatever the name of the world was alive for me.

Another fantastic tale I did not want to end from this author!

Murmuration

This was oddly good.It was long and a bit confusing at times, but very intriguing.Mike is in love with Sean, but is taking it easy. There are big age differences to consider, among other things. There are people in their world that just seem to disappear. The reason is astonishing.Kirt Graves is wonderful as narrator.I was provided this book free by the author, narrator or publisher.

5 stars!!

Holy. S h ! t.
TJ Klune is brilliant.

I listened to this book on audio and I have to give props to Kirt Graves - he really did a stellar job bringing this story to life.

I have no idea how to review this book other than to say I freaking loved it.

It started out...confusing. I had no idea what the EFF was going on. It felt like I might be losing my mind.

But the hints of the romantic side of the story kept me interested. I didn't want to give up because I didn't want to miss the romance.

I don't want to give any spoilers, but here's what I love about this story:
~ It's a slow burn.
~ It's very trippy.
~ It's magically crafted.
~ It's SO romantic. Like, so so romantic.

I'm working my way through all of TJ Klune's stories. He's amazing and I'm so glad I get to read his books.

Bottom line: don't let the "paranormal" or trippy parts of this book get in the way of picking it up. Keep reading (or listening) because once I got into it, I was HOOKED. I talked about this book to my husband, my 13 year old son, my coworkers, EVERYONE. It would make an awesome movie!

The plot and the storyline itself drew me in. The characters were well fleshed out and wholesome.

TJ is growing powerful

I expected "light;" I expected a bit of fluff. I got, instead, the next step in the maturation of a fine author. So many LGBTQ authors write m/m fluff, so many cannot completely disguise the fact that they are middle-aged straight women indulging a prurient fascination. TJ Klune writes books that have weight, meaning and substance in addition to passionate LGBTQ characters and TJ Klune is growing and I am going to get to watch this and think about it and I am anxious and excited by the prospect.

A Different Romance

Ok, let me start with the narration since that was THE winner. Kirt Graves is ahhhmmmaaaazing!!! He did a super job narrating. The voices were distinct and the emotions were unmistakable. I don’t think I’ve heard him narrating before, and it was an excellent experience.

Now the actual story -- I really struggled through this. And it was waaaay tooo long. I love TJ Klune, but this was exhausting.

This romance was very different. It was pure and old school. Its quaintness worked, but I guess I prefer a little more grit. The end, though, was beautiful as the story kept up guessing until the very end. Nice and sweet, but not outstanding.

I love T.J. Klune!

But this was weird. Well, brilliant imho...but weird.
Not exactly what I was aiming for emotionally at the moment.

T.J. Klune is one of my go-to's for hope, romance, HEAs, and goodness in people.
That's all in here. There is a very touching and true (dare I say "pure") romance that I really loved (mega slowburn, though). I also liked the age-gap and how that was handled.

HOWEVER, there was a kind of existential angst that didn't let go of me until the very end. I thought it was incredibly well-done how the suspense of trying to understand what was going on, once it gets you, doesn't let up until, really, very very late in the story. But you need all the stuff that comes before so it really ties in well. Great world building as well (literally).

About the narration: The narration was important for me; I can't say for sure, but I'm not sure I would have enjoyed it as much had I been reading it. I really liked the narrator's voice for some characters, a bit less for others, but no criticism there.

It's kind of hard for me to bottom-line this; I've got some mixed feelings.
There's some really important issues in this, and it's a great story. Hit me on many levels.
I'm very glad I read it, no regrets whatsoever, but I can't "favorite" this.

I'm glad I listened.

This kept coming up as a recommended book and it just didn't look interesting to me. But I took the plunge and bought it. I've recently decided that TJ Klune is my favorite writer. This story bordered on a line of scifi and I really enjoyed it. I've come to the conclusion that Klune can write anything. I don't want to have spoilers in my review so I won'tgo into to many details but i will say that i was rooting for Greg in the end. The narrator was a good choice also.
