Publisher's summary

A romance in the jungle - Grant Sullivan, tough, masculine and handsome, is a retired military expert entrusted with a mission in the Costa Rican jungle - to find hostage and socialite Jane Hamilton Greer. When Grant rescues her in a rather cavalier and physical fashion, no love is lost between them. But gradually, their mutual attraction and passion becomes apparent and the jungle smolders in more ways than one.

Decent book, annoying performance

Decent story, but the little-girl voice doesn't go with the strong, competent heroine, and the hero's lazy drawl slows even the most exciting escape scene down to Sunday picnic pace.

Voices sound elderly

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I thought the wording was old fashioned. Some sentences threw me as to the language used in the 1940's. I didn't like Jane's character...she was whiney and not in a funny good way.

What didn’t you like about Brenda Sweeney’s performance?

Nothing against her performance as the narrator. That voice would have been better for the main character. The voice she chose for Jane came out sounding...elderly. Jane is supposed to be still young and vibrant. As with all Linda Howard audible books...the voice doesn't match what the book describes. I hope LH reads these comments so she puts in some opinions on the casting.

Did Midnight Rainbow inspire you to do anything?

It inspired me to write my comments. Fed up with the elderly lady voice.

good..but

the story was good and unlike other reviews the narrator's voice was fine.....EXCEPT for the voice she used for Jane. she made her sound like an idiot.

An Old Proximity Danger Romance favorite from 1986

MR features an alpha type guy, Sullivan, who has 20yrs experience in jungle warfare and intrigue. He retired a year ago but has been pulled back to rescue a wealthy American Socialite woman kidnapped in Costa Rica. When he arrives in CR the situation becomes complicated and not quite what he expected.

I’ve reread this romp adventure a number of times since it was first published. It reminds me of the movie “Jewel of the Nile” (about same era) which I adore w actors Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. Great light fun! if readers can accept the old tech and alpha man deal. I find it a great reality break. Sweeney was great w Sullivan’s voice; I thought “Jane” sounded ridiculously prissy but it rather fits her odd personality. I’m sure I’ll enjoy this fave again.

This is bk 1 in a 4bk Rescues (Intrigue) series by Howard. Each bk is connected to a shadowing Covert Ops ldr called Kell Sabin.

A witty fast-moving audio book

This story is set in the early 80's - post Vietnam. The hero has hardened from his military career. He has come out of retirement for one last mission, rescuing the daughter of a very wealthy, influential man. Imagine his surprise when she turns out to be a smart, courageous, resourceful, and thoughtful woman. You will greatly enjoy the time spent with these two people.

Good old story

This story is like a Historical, Romantic Suspense. The descriptions in the book and the storyline are good. The narrator's voice is easy to listen and she makes a good Grant's voice. Overall, it's a good story, maybe a little unbelievable, but entertaining. *Warning* This book was edited in 1986 and narrated in 2013 (not updated). I think you have to keep this in mind before listening.

Narrator sounds like an 80 year old woman.

I remember reading this book years (decades) ago but unfortunately it is not available in an ebook. So l bought the Audible version. The narrator has no range or depth to her storytelling. She sounds like a librarian reading to children. The female MC is a very strong woman but is given the voice of a little girl. The male MC has the voice of an ignorant southern woman. He is supposed to be a seasoned jungle fighter. I am not looking forward to any romantic scenes. I will just laugh to avoid the cringing. Sorry to lose the credit.

Good story

This started out a bit rough, but ultimately it was a good story. The Hero wasn’t very nice to the heroine for a good portion of the beginning. It’s not what I prefer in my reads. The majority of the story is about these two running through the jungle trying to get away from her kidnappers. He was hired by her father to get her out safely. It is a pretty exciting story because of this. I think I had a harder time because of how the narrator chose to play out the heroines voice. It sounded way too girly and just kept throwing me off. I actually like how she did the heroes voice though.

Disappointing

Linda Howard has written a couple of my favorite books, but I think she's gone the way of James Patterson - putting her name on books written by novice authors. Either that, or it's a very early book of hers recently released on audio. That would be my mistake. At any rate, don't bother if you're looking for anything more than sexual fluff.

Loathed the narrator and found the heroine irritsting.

Not up to Linda Howard’s usual standards. Maybe it was an early book. Wanted to strangle the narrator is whose voicing of the heroine was grating, obnoxious, and cloying.
