While this book didn't change my auto-buy-author standing for Eloisa James, I don't think it was one of her best. Sophie and Patrick were likable characters, but the miscommunication and erroneous conclusions they would draw became tedious. Their repetitive misunderstandings thinned out and "dumbed down" both the plot and characters. The book had the potential for more depth and intrigue within the "Ottoman(Turkish)/French(Napoleonic)/spy/sabotage" subplot, but it seemed as though the author lost her aim or simply didn't want to dig that deep and it ended up falling flat.

While I absolutely adored the first book in Ms. James Pleasures Trilogy - POTENT PLEASURES, and it was quite wonderful, I had to admit I was looking forward to Book 2 and discovering whether Lady Sophie York who was Charlotte’s best friend would fare in her search for a husband. Naturally, I had matched Lady Sophie up in my mind to Patrick Foakes, the undeniable rake and identical twin to Charlotte’s husband Alex. But as usual, true love never seems to run smooth without a few bumps along the way!
Lady Sophie had watched her parents marriage dissolve and swore she would never have a husband who would flaunt mistress after another to the detriment and humiliation her mother had endured. So even though from the moment she laid eyes on the rumored rake hall Patrick Foakes, she had fallen hard, Sophie talked herself out of marital suicide by agreeing to marry, Patrick’s best friend the stodgy but kind Braddon, aka Lord Saslow. Braddon would be safe and kind and if she wasn’t in love, he could never break her heart.
Unfortunately, Patrick was furious! He had offered for Sophie and she turned him down flat! And she agreed to marry Braddon? Not only that but Sophie wanted to elope and Braddon talked Patrick into climbing a ladder and bringing Sophie to Braddon to explain why he couldn’t accommodate an elopement. And then of course, both Sophie and Patrick’s electrifying attraction saved the day as they both answered the call of magnetic attraction, calling for a hasty wedding.
Filled with such a believable storyline, and narrated by the excellent voice overs of Susan Daerden, this was an absolute pleasure to listen to. Ms. James knows how to put together enough angst, mis-communications, misconstrued feelings, jealousy and betrayals to fill the pages with a story that sped along and one didn’t want to stop listening to.
Bottom line: I have nothing but the highest praise for both this author, MIDNIGHT PLEASURES and the amazing narration by one of the best book performers out there. Can’t wait to read/listen to the third book in this fabulous trilogy!
