Publisher's Summary

With her greatest enemy dead, and on her way to be reunited with the family she'd been stolen from long ago, Yelena should be pleased. But though she has gained her freedom, she can't help feeling isolated in Sitia. Her Ixian background has changed her in many ways, and her newfound friends and relatives don't think it's for the better. Despite the turmoil, she's eager to start her magic training, especially as she's been given one year to harness her power or be put to death. But her plans take a radical turn when she becomes involved with a plot to reclaim Ixia's throne for a lost prince, and gets entangled in powerful rivalries with her fellow magicians.
If that wasn't bad enough, it appears her brother would love to see her dead. Luckily, Yelena has some old friends to help her with all her new enemies.

What the Critics Say

"Family betrayal, a power-mad serial killer, and a potential diplomatic crisis threaten the independent-minded heroine of Snyder's fine sequel to Poison Study....Snyder's lively, charming mix of romance and fantasy is sure to gain her new fans." (Publishers Weekly)

The bad point... wait there isn't one!

I bought Poison Study (first in the series) last year when the trilogy was on sale and am now mad at myself for not buying the whole trilogy at that time. I always have about 10 audiobooks in my library that I haven't listened to yet and I go through them in order of purchase... I listened to Poison Study two weeks ago and instead of going to the next in my list, I bought Magic Study.

And now I still have my 10 unlistened books and am going to go buy Fire Study...

The narrator is fantastic. The story is engaging and unpredictable. You care about the characters and want things to work out for them. It is a fantasy series with a female protagonist written with adults in mind and yet there is no obscenity or graphic sex.

- crazybatcow "I like Jack Reacher style characters regardless of setting. Put them in outer space, in modern America, in a military setting, on an alien planet... no worries. Book has non moralistic vigilante-justice? Sign me up! (oh, I read urban fantasy, soft and hard sci-fi, trashy vampire and zombie novels too)"

Magic Study

I was first introduced to Maria Snyder via "Poison Study", which was so far afield from my normal fare of suspense, mystery and intrigue; but those elements were all there residing in a tale of fantasy.
Then when "Magic Study" became available I was curious to see how it developed. Wow!
I just purchased, "Fire Study" becasuse I am hooked!
Fantasy is not my fare, but these three books have enlarged my audio entertainment vista and I recommend them without hesitation.
