Publisher's summary

Orphaned as a child, Arabella Hampton was the unwanted and unloved charge of a cruel aunt and neglectful uncle. The only light in her young life was the kindness of the Jonquil family, and she clung to the childish dream of someday living with them at Lampton Park. Now, years later, that opportunity is presented to Arabella in a most unexpected way: She is to be the lady’s companion to the dowager countess. As she takes up residence at the estate, the young woman soon finds that life at the Park is far more complicated than she imagined. The lines of her position are blurred, and she is neither family nor servant. So when the countess plans a grand house party, Arabella is content to hide in the shadows. But one gentleman sees her there.

Lieutenant Linus Lancaster has retired from the navy and is not looking for love, especially when he finds himself entangled in his sisters’ scheme to trap him into finding a wife at a house party at Lampton Park. Yet amid the festivities, he’s impossibly drawn to the dowager’s quiet companion, Arabella. Their regard for each other is undeniable, but they are haunted by their pasts. Can the two find a way to bridge their worlds?

love it as always

loved this book. the narrator is fantastic. she has performed several of Sarah M Eden's book and I really enjoy listening to her read. the story was great and I was finding excuses to listen just a little bit more. Eden's regency novels are my favorite of her collections.

Favorite of the series

This was my favorite of the series. I loved the crossover of the jonquil and Lancaster family. The exchanges between Lord Lampton and the dangerous Duke were great. There love story was sweet. I thought the character development & them finding their place in the world of the H & h was excellent. It was a love story but also of second chances at life and overcoming grief to find happiness.

Lovely!

This was a soft sweet romance where two lost souls found each other, a purpose to their lives and the joy of family.

Beautiful narration, slow story

What a beautiful voice and performance. I loved this narrator. The story was nice but not as compelling as other Eden books. The characters were very slow moving and unsure of feelings, the back and forth got annoying. I appreciated the portrayal of loss and the role of grief, but it seemed overdone at time. I enjoyed the main characters.

Did NOT like Narrator at all !!!

I have read/listened to other stories about the Jonquil family, and very much liked them. That is the reason that I listened to this book. But I did not at all like the Narrator, Aubrey Warner! She did not speak as the people in the story would have spoken. She was so breathy, and whispered in a LOW voice through a lot of the dialogue, and I can't figure out why?! There was absolutely NO reason for her to speak in that manner. It was like she was trying out something new just for the sake of trying it out, but it did NOT fit the story or characters at all ! I hated listening to her voice. The ONLY reason I listened to the complete story was because I like the Jonquil family.
Ms. Aubrey was either shouting when it wasn't called for, snarling when it wasn't called for, or whispering when it wasn't called for. It was very frustrating to listen to her! I intend to avoid books that she has narrated in the future. It was monumental for me to listen to Ms. Aubrey throughout the entire book! Yuck!

A bit too sappy

Of course, the sappiness was a combination of the narrator and book. For the book, the female main character’s endless missing so deeply and tragically of a father figure who was not her actual father seemed a bit over the top, tough situation at home or not...Miss Eden still had her trademark good humour. The narrator- at first I wondered if I should speed it up because she was soooo slooooow and excessively tender during sad moments of pondering etc...and had too many long pauses. However I got used to the slow stop and go after awhile and mostly enjoyed the book. Not a lot of plot though....

Didn't Like the Narrator - book was just okay

I struggled with the narrator and her portrayal of the characters. She made many of them one dimensional by always making them be a certain way. One character she always portrayed as overly angry regardless of what the character was saying. Sometimes it fits, but often it didn't. The story was okay, nothing special. The language held fairly true to the time period. The story was very predictable but sweet. With such a simple and predictable storyline the characters were naturally simple and 2 dimensional.

Excellent narration!

The story was sweet, but the narration made it come to life! Enjoyed the series and was disappointed that book 2 was not available.

Ok

So I have really enjoyed this series but this one was rather long. I enjoyed the first part but the rest lagged for me and repeated itself a lot.
