Publisher's summary

Born a noble woman, raised a hellion, Lady Narissa moves with ease between London's elite and its seeder occupants. Never quite accepting her role as an earl's daughter, she started a secret, female-only gaming hell catering to the ladies of the ton. She is determined to protect her legacy at all costs.

Seth Blakley, duke of Blackmore, has his hands full with his spirited sister. His only desire is to see her properly wed before she gets herself irrevocably ruined. He never could have imagined what he’d be walking into when he followed her into Lady Narissa’s gaming hell.

Seth is captivated by Lady Narissa and determined to learn more about the headstrong, unconventional beauty. Never mind that all she wishes is for him to be gone and his memory of her club forgotten.

Passion pulls the two together as they discover that love is more important than the obligations and loyalties that threaten to keep them apart.

A feisty heroine and a scoundrel

A hater to lovers clean romance complicated by Seth’s younger sister when she wants to join the Fortuna’s Parlor Ladies’ club. (Narissa’s gaming hall). Seth is a scoundrel, admonishing Lady Narissa’s behavior one moment then asking her to repeat it for his benefit which made me laugh.

At around four hours, Aiden Black did a delightful job narrated both the voices of Seth and Narissa capturing their banter and chemistry. Listening enhanced and strengthened this novella, and I enjoyed the telling of it.

Love Only Me!

This is the first story in the "Scandal Meets Love" series and it such a delightful read. The story is a stand alone read that is fairly short and quick. I enjoyed this story because of Lady Narissa, an Earl’s daughter who easily traverse high society and her own interest, horse racing, gaming, and more. I rather liked Narissa she is a force to be reconned with. She and her father had a goal.
They trained horses and one particular one. When her father passed she wanted to carry on their dreams. This is what led her to meet Seth. They both had horses in the race but she was the jockey on her. I love how this story develops. Two determined people who definitely met their match. When they finally admit it... WOW!

Unbelievable Heroine, But Fun Outrageous Series

If you like to read outrageous Regency series, this Scandal Meets Love one certainly fills the bill. It's hard to imagine a true Regency gentlewoman running a women-only gaming hell. But that's what the heroine of this book does. For some reason, society allows her more latitude than typical for an unmarried gentlewoman. She has spirit, for certain, and that's what appeals to the hero. He can't quite believe the shenanigans she gets up to … and it brings out his protective side! As this is such a quick read (or quick listen), it doesn’t have much room for development of either plot or character. Still, if you're in the mood for an outrageous quick-read Regency romp—without expecting it to reflect the times or have much to its characterization or plot—you may enjoy this book.

Great Series Starter

This was a great start to a new series. The character work and story line were well written and kept my attention. The narrator did a great job of breathing life into the story and made this a fun listen.

Not my favorite

I usually really like Amanda Mariel's romances, but this is not one of my favorites. The H and h were both proud and arrogant, and not terribly likeable. I also had trouble with the rapid change from enemies to lovers. I just didn't feel it. In the end, both stubborn parties yielded, and everyone lived HEA. I did want to know who Seth was trying to best in the race. I don't think it was ever said.

The narration was a challenge for me. It was very stiff and formal, and didn't really draw me into the story. I'm enjoying the series, and the related characters, as a whole, just not this one.

Battle of Wills

Lady Narissa learned two skills from her Papa.  He taught her to play cards and how to breed and ride horses.  She has put both skills to good use.  Playing cards led to her establishing Fortuna’s Parlor, a women’s gambling hell.  Her knowledge of horses has resulted in a fine stable and winning races, as a jockey.  Seth Blakely, Duke of Blackmore, is an arrogant scoundrel who can’t believe a woman bested him in a race.  When he learns her secret, he tries to blackmail her to ride his horse in a race instead of hers.  It’s her dreams against his pride.  Who will win?  This story is fast-paced with a well-matched hero and heroine.  It is filled with competition, snarky banter, and undeniable chemistry.  There is a battle of wills, a cute romance, and a happy ending with a surprise.  Aiden Black did an entertaining narration.

Lady Narissa

I enjoy other Amanda Mariel stories an looked forward to this book. It was an interesting story, with good characters. I felt it was a little predictable but still very enjoyable. This is a clean story with a HEA ending. The first thing I noticed was the narration, which grated on my nerves until I got used to it. The narration is a bit stiff, and does not flow like normal speech, even for books set in this era. Do not let the narration take away from enjoying the story.

Couldn’t get into it

Maybe it’s the length, but I wasn’t drawn in. I still kept it on in the background until the eye-rolling moment of the “bulge” comment. It was completely unnecessary and awkwardly thrown in gratuitously. Maybe the author thinks it can’t be a romance if there isn’t a reference to a man’s manhood and turning the story into a lust plot.

entertaining

Would I listen to it again: yes
Did the story keep me engaged: yes
Was I invested in the characters: yes
What did I like about the story? Unique story, good pace, entertaining characters and a feisty romance.
Was there anything that didn't work for me? not sure about the allowances afforded Narissa for the period, but it is fiction and I was thoroughly entertained (so I don't care!).

Narrator comment: I enjoyed Aiden Black's narration, he's done a great job bringing these characters to life, each character is clear and I enjoyed the audio experience.
