Publisher's summary

He watches her from across the crowded dance club, a sensual black-haired stranger who stirs Gabrielle Maxwell's deepest fantasies. But nothing about this night---or this man---is what it seems. For when Gabrielle witnesses a murder outside the club, reality shifts into something dark and deadly. In that shattering instant she is thrust into a realm she never knew existed---a realm where vampires stalk the shadows and a blood war is set to ignite. Lucan Thorne despises the violence carried out by his lawless brethren.

A vampire himself, Lucan is a Breed warrior, sworn to protect his kind---and the unwitting humans existing alongside them---from the mounting threat of the Rogues. Lucan cannot risk binding himself to a mortal woman, but when Gabrielle is targeted by his enemies, he has no choice but to bring her into the dark underworld he commands. Here, in the arms of the Breed's formidable leader, Gabrielle will confront an extraordinary destiny of danger, seduction, and the darkest pleasures of all.

A Whole New Take on Vampire Mythology

Lara Adrian's captivating Vampire mythology is completely unique. She has taken one or two of the "Hollywood" elements, but oh my goodness, the rest of her Vampire world is unlike anything I have read before and I cannot get enough of the richly detailed backstory that is flawlessly woven into the main story. The exposition is paced perfectly - giving enough detail to be relevant and intriguing, adding more suspense and mystery to the novel as the plot progresses.

We are immediately swept up into the story by Hillary Huber's sultry voice. Her pacing and timing are perfect and she is wonderful at breathing life into the characters. Each male has a distinct personality which she brings to life with clever and competent use of different accents and varying timbre, making it easy to listen and envision the story as it happens. Not a lot of female narrators can pull off the smoldering Alpha-Male characters without sounding androgynous and awkward. Hillary's portrayal of Lucan is just plain sexy. She adds color and character to each male in the book - breathing just the right amount of passion, restraint, desire, anger, self-loathing and acidic hatred into each character. Her female voices are decent, but they all seemed to sound the same to my ears. If Hillary continues narrating the series, the only thing that I would view as an area of development would be for to give the female characters a bit more of a range and flavor, as she does so amazingly with the male characters.

Great story - GREAT reader!

Hillary Huber, you rock! What an amazing example of how an audio book should be done! The story was compelling and complex and through it all she gave each and every character a solid (and unique) voice and personality. Her male characters were amazing! Even when 4 or 5 of them were having a conversation, I never had a problem telling them apart. Her female characters - the same. Using only her beautiful voice (and obvious acting skills) Hillary captivated me from beginning to end. Not to mention that any woman who can read very descriptive sex scenes (like the ones in Kiss of Midnight) without having even so much as a waver in her voice - well, suffice to say, she is GOOD!

Lara, please write more books! The story was so good and the characters so well developed - I can hardly wait for the next one!

LOVED IT!

Hot! Hot! and Hot!!!

I love this book. I have listened to it three times. Great plot with just the right amount of action, suspense and hot sensuality! I can't wait until Kiss of Crimson comes out on audio. The narrator was excellent!

Gives JR Ward a run for the money

I know I like an Author when I google to see what else they've written. This was a great debut and I can't wait for the rest of the series to become available on Audible.

I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of this series!

And to think, I almost didn't spend my husband's credits on this one because of the cheesy silhouetted gravestones on the cover. It ended up being one of my favorite listens. I liked the narrator too, so happy she didn't give Lucan a fake dracula accent.

Ask and you shall receive

I have been asking Audible to put this series on audio for almost a year now and thank you Audible for making this available. I loved this book series and think the audio version was just as thrilling. The narrator did a wonderful job with the characters. I'm happy they started with book one. Sometimes they start with the most recent book and work their way through the series. I can't wait for the rest of the books to come out!

great story with a great narrator

I have read the whole series and was curious if an audio version would measure up. I loved it! The narrator did a wonderful job. I hope we will see the rest of the series on Audible soon.

Unremarkable and not memorable

I listened to this for the first time over a year ago. I listen to a lot of books, and my memory is generally excellent. Imagine my surprise when I went to buy this book and found out I already owned it! I went back to re-listen, and although I had recall as I listened, for the life of me I couldn't remember where the story was going--although it's a no brainer to guess. The overall premise is unoriginal but tried and true. The performance is somewhat rote. While the narrator does give each character a distinct voice, it's the in-between stuff that just seems "phoned in"--like she has a cadence of delivery that works for her no matter what she's reading. She didn't act anything out except for the actual characters. Also, some of the detail of the story started wearing thin. In chapter 30-something, the author sites the arrival of a minion, then goes onto explain what a minion is. Yes, we know! We're almost done with the book! We know what minions are by now. Stuff like that got tiring. On a side note, every time the word "minion" was used, all I could imagine were the little yellow capsule-like characters from Despicable Me which provided me with some great comic relief!

Awesome series

I just finished reading this entire series and already devoured the Blackdagger Brotherhood series as well as the Twilight series. I have to say that I'm just as much in love with the midnight breed as I am the other vampire series I've read. It's a very nice take on vampire mythology. I'm dying to read the next book and am ready and waiting for the rest of the series to come out on audiobook. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the vampire "otherworldly" premise but I suppose that's Lara Adrian's take on it and I have to admit that it is unique. VERY happy with this series so keep it coming!

there's better

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would only recommend this to a friend whom LOVES paranormal romance and suspense but has already completely finished J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brother Hood series and Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series. This is more to hold you off until you find something better. Like eating a hershey's bar when really you want chocolate cake.

Has Kiss of Midnight turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not At All...I feel those who aren't used to this genre the new take on Vampire origins is intriguing and can make one interested to find even more untraditional outlooks on the legend of a creature that is as old as the character's age.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Hillary Huber?

Hmmm...hard to say...I wasn't completely disappointed by her. I liked her variations on different accents, she did that very well, but I wish the main male character hadn't sounded so angry all the time...he sounded pissed off even when he wasn't supposed to be.

Was Kiss of Midnight worth the listening time?

I guess so...I go through stages with my audio books. When picking this novel I hadn't had enough of paranormal romance, but had finished what is available on Audible in the other series I'm tangled up in. Kiss of Midnight did the job, but I am not interested enough to take on this series, just moved on to different genre's now.

Any additional comments?

This novel wasn't bad but it wasn't great. If you are interested in taking on a paranormal romance series I suggest the fore-mentioned or the Sookie Stackhouse novels, werewolf series by Patricia Briggs, or Blood Ties series by Jennifer Armintrout. Now those are series you can "sink" your teeth into!
