Publisher's summary

If you stop running, you fall.

Jonah Pastern is a magician, a liar, a windwalker, a professional thief...and for six months, he was the love of police constable Ben Spenser's life. His betrayal left Ben jailed, ruined, alone, and looking for revenge.

Ben is determined to make Jonah pay. But he can't seem to forget what they once shared, and Jonah refuses to let him. Soon Ben is entangled in Jonah's chaotic existence all over again, and they're running together - from the police, the justiciary, and some dangerous people with a lethal grudge against them.

Threatened on all sides by betrayals, secrets, and the laws of the land, the policeman and the thief must find a way to live and love before the past catches up with them....

***4.5 Soaring Stars***Breathtaking Narration!!

****4.5 Soaring Stars****

What an incredible addition to the Charm of Magpies,World! Jonah, the air/wind-walker we met in the previous book was a character that I loved to hate and hated to love when I first met him.

Ben was a man full of bitter bile and hurtful resentment towards Jonah. When he two meet up again, it’s explosive! The feels are sooo powerful, but neither man can communicate. Ben can’t trust Jonah; Jonah feels he deserves Ben’s pain.

Slowly, their story comes out. Slowly, trust builds, but I was never really sure of Jonah. Never sure that he would run again. I wasn’t sure that Ben would stick with Jonah, and neither was Jonah.

These boys ran me ragged as they ran across England escaping the reach of the justiciars and the police for Jonah’s past crimes and for Ben’s aide in his escape.

Well, the boys find their ground, so to speak, in a Cornish fishing village. Jonah agrees to play it straight—no more stealing. Watching these two re-acknowledge their love is a thing of glory!

But all is not safe yet for our lovers, no. Cameos by Stephen and Crane livened up the book, but for once, I was rooting for the other side—sorry Stephen! There is a heated debate between Stephen and Ben about crime and punishment that was very engaging and made very good points.

So, our lovers get a hard fought HFN/HEA, and as a reader, it was well worth it. Both of these characters had huge arcs and I loved how much growth they each experienced. Their change rang true and not forced—character growth rather than a major plot lay at the heart of this book.

If you’re and audiobook listener, you’ll love this one with its delightful and crazy Cornish accents! Cornell Collins is masterful with British accents. His narration definitely added much to this story!

Highly recommended!

Amazing

I have loved this reader from the first book and still do. As for the storyline I didn’t know how to feel about it, mostly because it was against the characters that I grow to love. But as the story went on I learned to love the side characters just as much and the resolution to the story is just too perfect. It’s like a wonderful extended story to the series main books and only adds without any detracting.

Just right

This is a balanced story with plenty of drama, but with a good helping of kindness and mild sweetness, nuanced tones between bliss and despair. It's a treat for me, anyhow.

A True Underdog Reform Story

Jonah was just precious. it really made me want to shake Stephan, but that us what happens when we don't take into account what others lives may have been like.

I wasn't sure if I'd like a book not about the Magpie Lord exclusively, but this is a great addition to the storyline.

Amazing!

I loved this installment! It was lovely to see how Jonah grew and how Ben learned to see from a different perspective to better understand his lover.

The reappearance of some fun characters yielded some surprising changes in the story worth reading!

Would definitely recommend if you love this series and if you want to have a small peek of Lord Krane and Mr. Day from the outside looking in.

Exquisite

Oh, KJ Charles, this book absolutely slayed me. I was not prepared to care this much — to feel such empathy toward — one of the key villains from Flight of Magpies. Foolish, misguided Jonah, I forgive you for absolutely everything you did in that book, including gleefully ripping Lord Crane’s portrait in half. Jackdaw has far less magic / mayhem / otherworldly good vs evil than the Magpie Lord trilogy. What it does have, however, is emotional depth, complexity, and one of the most satisfying redemption arcs I’ve encountered in years. Brilliant writing, brilliant narration, just an all around tour de force.

Magnificent!

This story brought me to my knees. Abandonment, betrayal, redemption, and love, so much love. I was crying hard by the end, and I don't cry. KJ Charles is amazing! Cornell is a joy to listen to. I have been buying up every KJ Charles audio and ebook I can find😊

good as always

this was good as it ever was and a good conclusion of the series 👏 would like to see more world building for the magic involved but perhaps the writer will do that later
