Publisher's summary

For Jacob and Daniel, two young gay men aboard a US Navy ship in WWII, the risks are high. Not only the risks of injury and death from Japanese planes and submarines, but the risk of discovery. Only a special kind of love is worth taking that chance. But from the moment Daniel meets Jacob's eyes across a battle-scarred deck, he knows he has to try. Being together requires figuring out what it means to be gay in an era when they could be discharged, imprisoned, or worse for admitting the desires of their hearts. Their relationship is measured in stolen moments and rare days of precious leave, with no guarantee there will be a tomorrow. And, if they survive the war, they will need even more luck to keep their love alive through the years to come.

This novel was written as part of the Goodreads M/M Romance Group's 2012 Don't Read in the Closet writing event: Love is Always Write. It won the 2012 LGBT Rainbow Award for Best Gay Historical Romance in 2012 and has been rated by more than 1,300 users on Goodreads with an average rating of 4.41 stars.

Even better in audio

I enjoyed this as an ebook. I enjoyed it as audio. The narrator aged voices as the decades passed, which added to the quality of the reading.

PHENOMENAL!

Any additional comments?

I almost made a enormous mistake. Because when I was offered a chance to read this story I almost said no because it’s a little outside my usual preferred romance genre era. And that would have been an mistake of gigantic proportion because this book slayed me in all the best ways.

Covering sixty-nine years of friendship, loyalty, and love this story uplifted me, broke my heart a little, then mended it, then filled it up. I love these characters so much.

I don’t know if it was Kaje Harper’s beautiful writing or Kaleo Griffith’s truly phenomenal narration or a combination of the two, but I loved this from start to finish. I was engrossed, enraptured and riveted throughout the entire story.

I haven’t listened to Kaleo Griffith before this audio, but I can assure you I will be grabbing something else of his after this. He takes these characters across their sixty-nine year relationship and ages their voices brilliantly. Do you know how hard that is to do? Believe me, I’ve heard a lot of narrators screw it up, but Griffith does it seamlessly. His performance was pure brilliance.

I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Kaje writes another amazing book full of emotion

Review of Audio book. 5+ stars!
This was superbly narrated with separate accents and manners of speaking for all characters including aging their voices for the men in the 80's. By sheer coincidence I was listening to the aftermath of the bombing of Hiroshima on the actual anniversary of that day. The narration brought out all kinds of subtly that in my rush of reading the first time I guess I glossed over. So many great things are in this book. So much emotion is brought out with the narration. Another instance of fiction and life intersecting, my husband and I are in the process of moving his 88 & 89 year old parents into an assisted living facility. Their physical condition closely mirrors that of Daniel and Jacob. Kaje is uncanny in getting all the details so perfect.
This is a remarkable book by a remarkable author.
Incredible!

Review of written book (may 2012):
I am writing this review just days after the President of the United States of America said he believes two men or two women who love each other should have the right to marry. Not sure I even dared believe this would happen in my lifetime.
I'm loving this story. But I knew I would--It's Kaje so of course I would love it, plus it's a romance that takes place over 60 years. Thats just off the charts for me.
I loved the innocence and uncharted physicality of their coming together. On a ship at sea even! The way it is written makes it so believable. The sinking of the ship was so painful as was their separation for the duration of the war. Just as reading about Jacob reading Daniel's letters from the war and how the drawings became fewer and fewer and then stopped.
I love how Kaje wove so much GLBT history into the story. Stonewall, what a watershed monument in history. Even though the book started with these guys in the 1940's, the thoughts and sensibilities reflect my husband's and my experience starting our life in the very late 70's. We too went thru dealing with forcing our families to decide that they had to include both of us or neither of us. We both work too long and take each other for granted. We both struggle with how close to be in public to friends who are a little too "nelly" for our taste or sensibilities.
It's like she is writing personally for me. I just love this story. My husband and I are in our mid 50's and I know we have many years ahead. But I do fear what age will do to us. I fear falling and Alzheimer's and stokes. I want him to be with me always. Life is full of changes and humans are frail. The one thing that is constant just like Daniel and Jacob is our love for each other.
Now I am crying with joy at the beauty of the ending.
This is going on my favorites shelf!
