Finally!

I have been waiting for this book to be released in audiobook format. I just love Dee Ann's parents in Big Bad Beast. We have heard about Darla Mae and Eggie Ray and they just seemed like the best couple. I was super pumped for this book. I was not disappointed in the least. The thing that surprised me the most was that Darla Mae was the one that had to chase Eggie in order for them to be together. I am also surprised how intense Darla Mae reacted to anyone who tried to bad talk Eggie. She was not playing about her feelings when it came to him.

We did see Ric and Dee Ann in the book however they did not have the same personality that I love in their book. That is the only thing that was annoying for me. I had them in my head and then it was ruined. This is a story that I will listen to over and over again because it is Eggie and Darla!!

Lots of laughs

Two good stories. The first one gave the background to the start of one of the families. Shelley Laurenston writes a good book, her characters are full of action and fun !
Cynthia Eden never fails to entertain! I have never been disappointed in one of her books.

Redneck romance; Bimbo assassin

Both books were on the cheesy, silly and awkward end of shifter romance. Mild spoilers follow.

Like a Wolf With a Bone by Shelly Laurenston
Apparently, the entire series is Hillbillies meets shifter zoo. There are hyena, bear, lion, and wolf shifters. The story revolves around two wolfpacks, one with all guys and one with all girls… who are conveniently pairing up. All the guys are named with variations of “Ray” as in Egbert Ray and Bubba Ray. All the gals are variation of “May” as in Darla May. and Jannie May. In this installment, Egbert Ray, aka Eggie pairs with Darla May. There’s a YA level mystery, lots of killing faceless humans (with zero consequences), and several nonsensical plots, like where Darla is a shifter pacifist who spends the whole books saying shifter violence isn’t the answer… until she chucks her pacifist principles out the window on behalf of some neighbor. The nooky is similarly clunky, with 25 year old Darla punching her V card within days of meeting Eggie. But, this was fun and sweet, in a cornball Reese W in Sweet Home Alabama kind of way.

Wed or Dead by Cynthia Eden
Non-stop, nonsensical plots. Let’s start with the premise of Kayla marrying shifter Gage in order to get close enough to kill him. What?! Because there couldn’t possibly be another way to get close to him? And, Kayla is a human who is supposedly a highly trained shifter killer… who brings a knife to a gun fight, and repeatedly fails to spot all the magical creatures hidden in plain sight. Kayla and Gage, trapped in a cage, where the enemy could come in at any moment… sounds like the perfect time to shag. The eyeroll is strong with this one. Unfortunately, this is lacking the humor and fluffy fun of the first book.

🐾 For campier, funnier southern shifter romance, stick with Robyn Peterman’s Ready to Were.
🐾 If you want shifter smex with minimal plot and maximum sizzle, go with Ruby Dixon’s Shift
(5 quickies featuring shifter guys and human gals).

To other Laurenston fans who stalled because, hey.

I confess. I kept bypassing Laurenston's Like a Wolf with a Bone because I couldn't imagine Egbert Ray Smith--Eggie to his Pack--as a romantic character despite years of Pride/Pack references to how he adores his mate, Darla Mae. Also, since I started listening to this incarnation of the author with Charlotte Kane/Johanna Parker as the narrator, and was generally happy with that pairing, I was reluctant to try Kasha Kensington's version of the voices.
Wrong on both points. But unlike many other outcomes of personal prejudice, these two misconceptions gave me an wholly unexpected treasure. I was comfortable with Kasha's voices, some even better (imo) than Charlotte's. That's an aside. The preferred characters are not in this tale.
And Eggie. And Miss Darla Mae. Happy sigh. Wonderful story, full of family folly, warm with unexpected sweetness and strength, laced with Laurenston's signature humor.
I'll never read--or re-read repeatedly--anything with Eggie Ray without remembering this back-story and smiling...

Very slow

They were both slow moving stories. I fell asleep twice. Interesting idea for a book, I wasn’t impressed.

Eggy is lovely

I just liked getting to hear about how these two started. They are pretty amazing and I was such a fan of the pair I’m happy we got a look at them.

I’d never read the other author before and I really liked the intro and plan to go look for a few more. Great reads.

Ms Laurenston is awesome

I liked how traps between adversaries were almost always backfiring. I loved the romance between two protagonists who had been enemies.
