Publisher's summary

Even the inhabitants of secluded Nethercote looked pityingly upon young Henrietta, the vicar's sister; her plain features seemed to almost guarantee her a solitary future. And yet she had a determined spirit and magnificent hazel eyes. So when her great-aunt Hester left her unexpected wealth, Henrietta set out to conquer London's glittering high society and confound them all.

But the fashionable elite was less than warm in its reception, especially when the newcomer, this bold minx, made clear her intention of winning the heart of one of society's most treasured gems: the irresistible, extravagant, heart-stopping Lord Beau Reckford, a prize wildly beyond her humble origins.

Cute but long for what it is

A simple yet circuitous story with several tedious parts. Especially because it had an opportunity to end in multiple places but didn't. The shenanigans and misunderstandings went on too long for me, which I remedied with faster speeds and skips. It was more interesting and funnier in the beginning but became eye-rolling in the second half, particularly toward the end. Good for background entertainment if you can overlook that the H/h repeat mistakes and don't seem very smart. Lindy was an excellent narrator as usual. TRIGGER and potential SPOILER: though Marion Chesney usually writes clean stories, this one has a couple of quick gruesome scenes of death that took me by surprise. They came on so fast, there was no lead up time to turn the volume down or skip forward to avoid seeing the images in my head.

One of my favorite MC Beaton stories

Although it's very long for one of her books, the story is different and the characters are fun. The heroine is plump and the hero is not conventionally handsome but they are funny.

Written in the 70s... so expect some nonsense

This book is free, so that’s an easy enough reason to get this book.

However, it can be problematic. Not nearly as problematic as others I’ve read, but still.

There’s a significant amount of fat phobia. Our heroine is introduced as chubby and not pretty, except for her “magnificent haze eyes.” Fine! We love an unconventional heroine. However, she goes through some emotional distress and her appetite takes a nose dive. SUDDENLY she’s pretty! The hero thinks so! There’s some more nonsense, but this should give you some indication.

It’s certainly an amusing book. The twists and turns can be a bit excessive, but it was entertaining. I’ll be listening to more in the series.

bad free book...

I almost ditched this book a bunch of times. Not only is the relationship of this couple horrible but the plot just got worse and worse. I do not recommend this book.

spoilers: when the male protagonist found out who the murderer was he flew off the rails and kidnaped the female protagonist at gunpoint and locked her in his attic even tho he could have explained his plan to her. like not sensible at all!!! and how the female lead was in love at first sight but then the male lead would do horrible stuff to her constantly and she still liked him?? is she a masochist? most of it was miscommunication sub plots.

I dislike incredibly stupid heroines

Henrietta makes the same mistakes over and over. So does the hero.It reminds me of the bad horror movies where the stupid girl follows a blood trail into the dark basement…….and we know how that ends.
Henrietta Survives, against all odds. But she never gets any smarter. Neither does the hero

I did finish it. it was pleasant and g rated….at least she was smart enough to keep her clothes on.
It wasn’t a book I will
read again, but it passed the time.

Cute!

I love to listen to these MC Beaton Regency books in between my monthly audible book selection. They are a pleasant way to pass the time and very good for easy and light reading. 👍🏻 Please keep them in the plus catalog!

Early M.C. Beaton beware!

Any additional comments?

I've tried these early Marion Chesney (M.C. Beaton) Regency romances before and found them to be mostly very poor. I tried this because of the 4 stars and good reviews. I shouldn't have. The writing is bad. It is a miserable Georgette Heyer rip-off.

Loved it!

One of favorites! Nicely paced and so funny to hear the stories from the companion.

Second Order Idiot Plot

This book is truly awful and was apparently written before the author was informed that logic should play some role at some point in the story. It seems the 70s were a time when a protagonist needed no redeeming quality whatsoever. Truly a terrible story that is not worth your time. I heartily recommend skipping this abomination.

The narrator

This is maybe the third time I have read this book. Henrietta can be such an idiot but I loved her anyway.
