Publisher's summary

When I was 17, I disappeared. I walked out the door of my apartment with a backpack and never looked back. I left the life of Cora Mitchell behind, seeking freedom from my real-life nightmare.

But my freedom came with a cost. I lived a fictitious life for the next six years, never letting anyone close enough to see underneath the façade that was Andra Walker. I was content with my simple little life. Until I met Julian. And the moment I started allowing myself to open up, allowing someone to see through the superficial, was the very same moment the Monster from my past would return to find me.

Not a great listen

More of a very explicit love story than a thriller. Some ridiculous twists in the storyline.

Good listen, abrupt ending

This was a good listen and I really enjoyed listening to it. The end was so abrupt that I felt like it ruined the book. But, on reflection I did enjoy the book. Just wish there was a little more to the ending.

Wow

Wow was this story beautiful. The ending makes me weary, but Andra isn't. Gives the title a whole new meaning. There has to be a book after this.

I truly enjoyed this book.

I was surprised that this book was as good as it was. It was well written and the main character finally had a back bone. That was refreshing. Most books I've read has the main female character weak and dumb. Complete opposite with this book. She is smart and strong.

Left you with questions.

It had such potential for some twists and a good story but ended abruptly. I would have like more from this story. Nothing was really tied together.

Very romance novel-y

The writer is talented and I’m not writing her off for the future. I personally am turned off by fantastical romance stories that perpetuate unattainable and unreal love models. I feel the expectations they can create for real life can be harmful. A lot of real estate in this book is devoted to such a romance and I ultimately couldn’t get thorough it so although I stand by my romance novel comments my review is not 100% fair because I didn’t finish the book.

No substance and no answers

This was 8 hours of wasted time. The book had potential but went absolutely no where. It read as if it were the beginning outline of a book and then put an extraordinary amount of boring filler. It seemed as if the author was trying to set a suspenseful mood but wound up just throwing more pieces of information and characters that either really went nowhere, or when pieces did fall into place, it was anticlimactic.

The book had a LOT of descriptive verbiage. I can see using that if it was relevant to the story, but most of it wasn’t. We don’t need to know the steps she took to clean the cabins and how she put fresh towels out, and that she would put the welcome basket in the cabins the next day before the guests arrive. We don’t need to know whose windows in the main lodge has their lights on in the middle of the night, because it wasn’t relevant. We don’t need to know that a cover charge for watching the band play is because several local small towns get together to bring in the talent and use the money for that. It isn’t important nor significant to the story itself. Just a whole bunch of stuff like that. It was like reading every entry on someone’s daily journal regardless of how mundane it is.

This is the first, and possibly the last, time I will listen to this author.

UGH cliff hanger

I enjoyed the creative story line Whitney Barbetti tells but was so annoyed with the cliff hanger -
It was nice to listen to a woman find herself after getting out of an abusive situation and finding love -
I'm now listening to book 2 - thank goodness it's already available for listening.
