Publisher's summary

You think you've got some bad date stories? My last date ended with me almost being sacrificed to a Hawaiian war god. Then I found out that all the gods are real. Only they aren't really gods, they're Atlanteans. Yep, that Atlantis.

They screwed up their perfect island (and sank it) then had the nerve to move in on our territory. As if that wasn't bad enough, they told us normal humans that they were gods. And we believed them. Why? Cause they did really cool things. So we sacrificed to them, and they took that energy and used it to make themselves even more powerful.

Then a little thing called science came along, and we stopped believing in the supernatural. We stopped sacrificing to the gods. They lost their power source, and that pissed them off royally. So they started thinking up new ways to get sacrifices from us. Like starting wars. They manipulate us into killing each other, and guess who gets the energy? That's right, they do. They get stronger with each one of us who dies.

You think I'm crazy, right? Yeah, that's pretty much why I don't go shouting it from the rooftops. It's also why I've taken it upon myself to stop them in any way I can. I may not be some kick-ass superhero, but I happen to be a witch, so at least I've got magic on my side. I promise you, I won't stop fighting until I free us from the manipulations of the gods. Not even for a hot Viking god who wields a big hammer. No matter how good he looks in his leather pants.

I'm Vervain Lavine, the Godhunter, and unfortunately, I'm not crazy.

Great story, great series but

But I really wish there was a different narrator. It takes awhile to get used to the author's voice. Then again once you're used to it, then you can get lost in the story. And she does an okay job but I'd rather here another narrator. Listen to the sample before you buy. Then decide. I'll be doing that for now on instead of blindly clicking books I love.

Love This Series & Amy's other Reverse Harems!

I've actually read all 36 books in this series, so I decided to re-read the book as I listen along - while anxiously waiting for the next book. After four years (since I found Amy Sumida in 2019), I still love it and it makes me want to re-read the other books, too!

Amy isn't a professional narrator, but she's providing this audiobook for free, so it makes COMPLETE sense that she would do it herself when she's actually quite good at it! She's so much better than many others: she doesn't make her voice all weird or talk excessively slow when narrating as a male or different character, changing it just enough; she varies her tone appropriately - not monotone OR excessively emotional/dramatic, even during intimate scenes; and she's easy to understand. I would listen to another book narrated by her!

I'm usually a slow, meticulous reader, but I can't stand listening to audiobooks at speeds slower than 1.5x, usually 2x speed. Being able to listen as I read allow me to finish a book much faster and add another sense in which I can enjoy the book.
I wish Amy Sumida would produce more audiobooks of her reverse harem series, esp. Twilight, Spellsinger and Godhunter!

Worst Narration

This must be the worst attempt at narration I have experienced. The story is immature and will have you rolling your eyes at the poor writing.Dont bother, there are many well written paranormal books on the market!

split opinion

now first I love this series and have read it many times i decided to give the audio book a chance I just could not be happy whit it,i think this would have been better whit a professional narrator , while this give me an better understanding in to Vervaine's speech and mannerisms I can't get past the way Amy pronounced some words and the fact that it was poorly edited so much repetition of the same sentences. that said I still love this book and Amy Sumida but will stick to the written version.

Awesome. Want MORE!!

This was wonderful. I loved the story and look forward to the next. I wish audible had the next in the series. I look forward to it. And I loved her voice. It was so easy to fall into the story.

Author narration, disappoints again

Let me start by saying the author has a pleasant voice, and rhythm to her reading. She’s clearly read/listened to enough audiobooks to know how to properly narrate male voices, intimate situations, anger and other emotions, but for me it didn’t work well.

It’s very rare that an author will narrate their own book, when it’s not a motivational, self-help, how to sort of work. However, every so often one does, and in those cases the narration always seems to fall a little short for me, and I don’t know why. It seems as though since it’s the actual author narrating their own words, pronunciation, tone and emphasis should all be perfect. Yet several words, common ones at that, were pronounced incorrectly. Or at least given pronunciations I’ve never heard before. 🤷🏽‍♀️ And the audio was frequently twice dubbed. Where the narrator repeated a sentence (or part of it), then read it again before continuing. Now, given this is audiobook and not an actual printed book I don’t know for sure that it wasn’t written way, but it certainly didn’t make sense in the context of the conversation that was occurring in the scene. Would’ve been a little annoying and easily forgotten if it was just once or even twice, instead it happened multiple times.

This appears to be the only book converted to audio so far, and I certainly hope that a professional narrator is hired for the other books in the series. I’m intrigued and definitely looking forward to the continued saga, but I don’t think I will do any more audio if a professional isn’t hired for the rest of the series. Either that or a much better editor needs to be found.

So glad I stuck with it

This is an incredible book, with an amazing blend of humor, adventure, myth and lore, and love. I would have missed all of it if I’d given up on the narrator. I’m guessing she’s a native Hawaiian, perfect to voice the strong, funny heroine, whose pop culture references made me laugh out loud. I can’t wait for book 2.

Almost a good idea

What could have been a really fun adventure turned into pure torture. Who thought it was a good idea for the author to read her own book! She is TERRIBLE. I just couldn't continue listening. This only supports my contention that there is no editorial review in the audio book business. Perhaps a more gifted reader would have made me enjoy this book and the rest to follow.
