Publisher's summary

The first book in the USA Today best-selling series from Erin Nicholas!

Genius scientist Mason Riley can cure world hunger, impress the media, and piss off the vice president of the United States all before breakfast. But he's not sure he can get through his high school class reunion.

Then he meets the new girl in town.

Adrianne Scott loves Sapphire Falls. The sleepy little town has been the perfect place to escape her fast-paced, high-stress lifestyle. Her only plans now include opening her candy shop and living a quiet, drama-free life.

Until Mason Riley bids $400 just to dance with her.

Mason sure doesn't look - or kiss - like a genius scientist geek. In fact he makes Adrianne's heart pound like nothing she's ever experienced. Passion like this with a guy who travels the world and parties at the White House should probably be a red flag for a girl who wants a simple, boring life.

Good thing no one falls in love in a weekend.

Warning: Listen only if you don't mind some naughty words, sexy times described in great detail, humor, small-town quirkiness, meddling best friends, mud in the kitchen, references to bisexuality - oh, and talk about candy...and that's not a euphemism for anything...actual candy.

Critic reviews

"Kate Udall's narration conveys the sexual tension in this story about a science genius who finds the girl of his dreams at his high school reunion. Udall's varied voices and pacing capture the diverse characters of the town of Sapphire Falls, Nebraska. The resonance of Udall's voice deftly captures Mason Riley's confidence as he returns to his hometown 11 years after making his fortune. There he finds that the people who once regarded him as a geek now need his financial help to save their tiny town. While Udall brings a bit too much melodrama to Adrian's voice, her tone communicates her determined pursuit of Mason. Some extended pauses break up the narrative flow slightly but also give additional steaminess to Mason and Adrian's moments of passion." ( AudioFile Magazine)

Hated it! Manipulation is not love!

Geez, I was so on board until about 1/2 way thru when it was apparently important to manipulate, humiliate and purposely hurt her lover... for his own good of course <huge angry eye roll>. Yeah because talking with him with kindness, patience and logic would be too ... unfortunately respectful? loving?

Then forgiveness is super easy for him because he was desperate and she's a hot piece of ass! (The sex scenes were fine, but eh, certainly not the best I've read... not enough build up to get you hot, kinda technical)

So yeah,, the premise was cute,, need returns home as hero gets the hottest girl in town who was, of course, a homecoming queen (oh brother <2nd eye roll), but I lost all respect for the women in the book when they took it upon themselves to scheme to get what they wanted, justify their abhorrent behavior as rescuing the clueless genius from himself. Even with a HEA I was so angry I wished I had never opened the book!

not a fun rollercoaster

I usually like books by this author, but I really really struggled to finish this one. There were way too many ups and downs and highs and lows. How many times can the heroin change her mind in 3 days? If you really like teenage angst, this book would be for you. But I really prefer more mature and adult theme, conversation and thoughts.

Crazy, quirky, cute.

Loved it. Stress free escapist romance, HEA and hot hot hot.

Small town story, characters galore, lots of fun. Includes the girl you love to hate, the guy you hate loving, and all the shenanigans you can throw in the mix.

Fabulous narration too.

Interesting Story - Gets Better by the End

I wasn't sure about the story at first, but by the end it was good. Sex on a Porsche car hood at a bar was kinda cra crazy and unbelievable. The story gets better by the end.

Awful narration

The worst narrator every. Poor choice ruined the book. Can’t stand to listen anymore. Ugh.

Intro to Sapphire Falls

A hero who is a scientific genius (and calls the vice president of the US rude names) and a heroine who can rock both denim and pantsuits with ease. What’s not to like? It was lust at first sight for Mason and Adrianne and I was here for it. They were great on their own, but together… wow! The connection between them was fast but strong. And super hot. I wasn’t sure about this book at first, but the characters and quirky small town drew me in. Especially Lauren. I hope we see more of her because we so rarely get to see a bisexual character. Especially one who has such spicy kisses with a main character. I’m still fanning myself as I load up the next book.

Small town romance

This book was just ok for me. It had a slow start which got better in the end. I am curious to see where the rest of the series goes.

Embracing love instead of fear

I loved Mason and Adrianne’s hot nerd, opposites attract, fling, small town romance. This story checked all the boxes and had the perfect balance of humor, heartwarming love, real life issues, painful pasts, and spice. I have a soft spot for the people who are a bit uncomfortable in their skin because they don’t feel like they fit in or are worthy, like Mason. So I love when they finally see their truth, their worth and they get swoon worthy HEAs. Adrianne used to live a face paced, stressful life until life forced her to slow down. Now she’s all about a low stress life and opening a candy shop in small town Sapphire Falls. Mason is a genius agricultural engineer who is helping to solve worldwide food shortages. He grew up in Sapphire Falls but has no desire to return to the place where he never fit in. He reluctantly agrees to go to a reunion and listen to a spiel about investing in a commercial enterprise in town. His view of the town and his life takes a sharp turn the moment he lays eyes on Adrianne and hears her laugh. To get to their HEA, there will need to be a lot of baggage unpacking and leaps of faith for both of them. The book was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline with sweet moments, steamy scenes, supportive friends, painful pasts, imperfect characters, missteps, and all the big feels. I will be devouring this series and figuring out how to take my own notes.

Kate Udall did a good job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters convincingly. I love the added dimension narration gives to a story.
