Publisher's summary

Five Aston has known Rory Shrike for as long as he can remember. He played with her in the sandbox. He went to every damn horse show just to be supportive. He helped her with her French, walked her home from school, and faked his test scores just to stay with her a little longer and not be sent off to college early.

But eventually he had to move on.

And so did she.

Never has a second chance meant so much to a boy who loves a girl.

Five is a standalone book that is a prequel to the Mister series and also a spin-off of the Rook & Ronin series. You can listen to it first, you can listen to it last. It doesn't really matter because it's f--king Five.

Includes a special bonus note read by the author.

YES YES YES, This is exactly what I needed in Five & Rory's story! I love this entire world that the author has created, the only issue I have is that I have a terrible memory so with all the twists and turns in these books I almost need to re-listen every time a new book is released. One day I will start from the beginning and binge on this world. Five's story was perfect in my opinion! After the other Mister books I fell in love with Five and needed to know his story and needed the back story of him & Rory. These two were meant for each other from the very beginning....literally! Five is mysterious but is also a very good guy who just wants to live his live with Rory. Rory is a badass and the perfect compliment to Five. Together these two have a plan and even if everything doesn't go exactly like that thought, they are unbreakable. I really enjoyed getting to know the softer side of Five and how much he loves Rory. Again I have to say, JA Huss knew exactly what we needed and gave it to us with perfection!

The narration was PERFECT!!!! I have serious love for Teddy Hamilton so I knew he would make this book amazing but I had no idea that Anna Riordan would make Rory into exactly what I needed!! Great casting as always by JA Huss! You can always tell when an author cares about their audiobook when they are GREAT at casting for their characters!

"WOW"

Loved reading this book when it was first released, and I loved listening to it even more.
Five, was a long awaited release for me and many JA Huss fans, and it didn't disappoint. Five got his Princess, and Rory finally got her Prince, it was always written in the stars.
This is the prequel to the Mister Series, and it sets everything up beautifully.
Excellent casting, two outstanding narrators making a great book so much more

As ludicrous as a whip cream bikini

This was only my second book by this author and, even as a free listen, this was bad. From the first book by this author (In To Her), I was ready for the mouth and the x-rated “anything but missionary” get-togethers. But for all the dirty, In To Her had a better plot and sizzle, oh, my, the sizzle. This book didn’t sizzle at all. Everything in this book fell flat for me.

Spoilers follow, big and small:

My three biggest gripes:

1) Juvenile characters, plots, and dialogue. The dialogue goes from “I hate you” to “kiss me” to “I love you” like those crazy eyes in the cat-clock. Their flirting and fking is not at all credible and would only happen in a teenager’s wet-dream. For example: they’ve been apart six years and, within 24 hrs of reuniting, she waits for him in a whip cream bikini…with strawberries! 🙄

2) Weak women. I love alpha men, but only if the women have at least half a brain. Rory is shallow, stupid, and nothing but a damsel for 99% of this book. She’s attending Princeton to date, not to get a degree. She constantly threatens to kickass, and insists she’d never let a man boss her around, and then proceeds to let Five make all the decisions. She’s a skinny, white, rich, daddy’s girl with a pony and private jet… that we’re supposed to believe is cool, and not pretentious, because her parents have tattoos and are rough around the edges? And, her nickname’s Princess… which is used ad nauseoum. 🤮 Sadly, it looks like this entire series pairs alpha men with skinny snowflakes.

3) Non-sense plots. I can suspend belief for romance, but not to this extent; nothing makes sense:
🙄 love of her life left with no word for six years, and she’s okay with not getting an explanation …for most of the book
🙄 love of his life, and yet he won’t explain why he needs to stay away, because….?
🙄 finds a secret lair in the family garage and never confronts the family about it
🙄 she gets invited to a secret fraternity/sorority on campus, where they engage her to a man she’s never met on her very first night, and she goes along with it
🙄 his Chinese triad grandfather dies and leaves his mafia kingdom to Five, a 1/8 Chinese 21 year old from Colorado? This last one is particularly galling because, other than appropriating the Asian mafia idea, there is zero time spent on anything Chinese in this book- no culture, no description of Five as looking remotely Chinese, no attempt to portray how Asian mafias operate. With so little effort, why not just make the mafia white? A Russian mafia would have made slightly more sense.

Update 2022: weirdly, I quite liked book 1 (Mr. Perfect), which was fun, twisted, flirty and dirty. Go figure. Guess it was a good thing I got them together at a sale, otherwise I wouldn’t have moved on in the series. I still think this prequel is a hard pass, but based on book 1, I am willing to try another in the series…when it goes on sale.

Update 2023: I’ve now heard quite a few of the author’s books. She favors entitled white girls, billionaires who are also biker-spies (apparently that’s a thing), and series-spanning criminal conspiracies that are supposed to be dangerous but come off as comic book-level implausible. On the plus side, it’s not Dark Romance as the H/h are still white-hats. On the down-side, I’m often exasperated and lost among the overly complicated (and needlessly hidden) plot twists. These aren’t really standalones and should be listened to in series order starting at book 1. I most enjoyed books 1 & 4 in this series because the romance side had more fun.
On sale, I don’t regret listen to the entire 1-5 mystery arc, but I got to the end yelling “that’s it?! That’s the conspiracy?! That’s how they triumph?! Puhleeeze!” Book 6 was a 6 hour bonus epilogue of all the couples worth it only if you loved the series … and I realized I should have listened to this prequel last, with the proper “suspend disbelief and go with the motorcycle-spy-mafias&conspiracies flow.”
Listening to this book again after hearing the entire series, I’m slightly more forgiving of this oh- puhleeze story, but I still feel like this is a story unworthy of Five.

Rory and Five, finally

Wow,
Just like any of JA Huss novels, there is a complicated plot. You seriously have to pay attention because there are so many hints for things to come and answers to the hints from previous novels. I swear, I have to take notes to keep everything straight. Not to mention, this is the prequel to the Mister series that Have already be published so there is another mind f***, because you have to rewind your brain to the beginning of the mister series to follow this book. Whew! Now, however, to finish this couple’s story, you have to read/ listen to Mr and Mrs. Therefore you have to fast forward you brain back through the mister series to understand the accurate setting for this final book in the mister series. No worries, at least most of JA’s books have the EOBS at the end, which, for those who do not know, is a explanation given by the author which is meant to untangle your brain and give you hints to what’s to come. Yes, it can be a serious mental workout. However, one of the coolest things about her books is, because of the complexity of her plots, you can relisten to ever novel and catch some new detail and get even more enjoyment. Well, I’m off to purchase Mr and Mrs.

Honestly not good

I only listened and finished, because that’s all had on my app at that moment. Story was blah, still don’t understand why he left 6 years ago. To protect her from what?... characters were boring

Don't start with this book

I wish i didn't start with this book because it's like they danced around an issue that was never mentioned or must have been mentioned in the earlier books so its very confusing. I still don't know why Five left 6yrs earlier. Also Five is a stupid name but thats just me. Nothing was really answered and now I have way more questions.

Hard pass…

This was very tough to even finish. The entire book is full of secrets you never find out and a female character who cannot stop whining and feeling sorry for herself. Teddy Hamilton did a good job of narrating, but that was it for this book.

I want my two hours back!!

I couldn't even finish this book. Over two hours in and zero interest. I'm glad it was free.
The main characters are 21 years old, The word choices are vulgar at best. The F word is used so frequently I can only assume the writer has a limited vocabulary.
After two hours I still had no clue what was going on in the story. They seemed to be trying for some sort of espionage or conspiracy theory, but I'm not even sure. It wasn't why I selected the book. Zero what I would call romance.
