Publisher's summary

"You never have to be without me, Laney, never." He lied...my everything I ever knew, trusted, wanted...I am, in fact, without him. On my own and out of my shell, I learn new things about life, friendship and...myself. Like what you've always known may not be what you've always wanted.

Dane Kendrick awakened things within me that I never knew existed, unraveling and uncovering the real Laney Jo Walker. I'm a new adult...so is my story.

Rating this was a struggle

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

I struggled to rate this book because it was very well written, and well narrated. But it left a really bad taste in my mouth by the end, and I had to skip entire chapters because I just couldn't deal with the plot. I loved all of the characters except for the main one -- she was an awful, awful person. Narcissistic and self-centered, and not very easy to relate to (even though I am a person who actually married her high school sweetheart). By the end of the book, I wanted her to be hit by a truck. She wasn't likable and made terrible choices ... like the typical 18 year old maybe? But I just couldn't enjoy the story.

Maybe I'm just too old for this

Seriously felt like an adult at the children's table with this one. It's sugary sweet disney, with just a hint of r rate sprinkled in. Fairytales do come true, gorgeous girl doesn't know she is and then suddenly becomes popular, feel like I've seen this movie kinda thing.

16 and Older Beware

If you are 16 and younger this book may be entertaining. I did not finish because it felt like I was reading a teenager’s diary.

Did Anyone Else Just Want to Smack Laney?

I love this author, love this book but there were just too many times in this story that I just wanted both of these great guys to move on and find someone who would appreciate them. I understand teenage angst, but this chick ... I don't care for weak female characters and Laney's neediness made her seem weak. Fortunately, this story is so well written and the characters are fully developed with each showing different levels of depth that it's easy to overlook the flaws of the characters. Cause in all honesty, I wanted to smack Evan too for being so strung out on this girl that seemed to take way more than she ever gave.

Amazing narration -- love the trio of narrators. Hope to hear them in other books in the series.

Definitely worth the price I paid. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. This was a great start.

Glad I didn’t listen to some reviews

I don’t know if some of the people who said such awful things about Laney’s character are just social media trolls on a busman’s holiday or secretly posting twisted reviews to make people listen to the book to see for themselves. What the author shows us in the character of Laney is an insecure and usually shy teenager who is raised by her father and missing her absent mother. Laney is innocent and naive and the epitome of a college freshman away from home and her best friend for the first time. She’s only as self centered as your typical 18 or 19 year old girl and is no narcissist, as one reviewer, who I really wonder if even actually listened or read the book, said and is actually pretty empathetic and definitely sweet. Does she make mistakes and is she sometimes clueless? Does she let fear keep her from facing things and cause heartache for Evan in the process? Definitely, but Evan is acting his age as well and he’s not exactly making good decisions. I am interested in where the series takes these characters and wish all of them, well except Caitlin, there’s your narcissist, the best. But Evan is responsible for himself and not Laney. If you can handle freshman in love and angst then you’ll like this story. My actual rating is a 4.5.

Laney ugh

For the most part the book was good but she made me mad giving Evan hope instead of just being honest since she was supposed to be such an honest person.. bs woman up laney

Very mundane

Unfortunately I couldn't finish this one and I removed the rest in the series from my library. I am all about the narrators and for me, this lacked everything. There is no expression, too much pausing, just dull.

Super cute and steamy

There are some cliches - virginity, childhood soulmate love, super rich new boyfriend - but it was an amazing listen. Felt so invested in their story and was rooting for all of the characters to have their (albeit not a reality I ever witnessed) amazing forever happy ending. However, isn’t that why we all immerse ourselves into these stories? For the idealism and abandon that we all fantasize about? This listen nailed it, and I literally found myself grabbing at my husband of five years ignited and aroused.

I hate laney

The story was well done but I'm so mad and heartbroken over the Evan situation. I'm so upset

It was okay

So many things that I rolled my eyes about in this book. I liked the narration and it was probably close to what college would be like for sex crazed young adults. The nicknames were annoying and the not being able to make up her mind was also annoying. I understood that she was young but make a decision. It was okay I guess but not something I would listen to again.
