Publisher's summary

Mya's world is falling apart. After a series of earthquakes, deadly animals with glowing red eyes begin attacking people and start the spread of a zombie-like plague. Safety is just a memory as she tries to make her way home. When a different creature attacks the people helping her reach Oklahoma City, Mya is sure she'll never see the light of another day.

Despite his eerie green eyes and very sharp teeth, the grey-skinned creature is more intelligent and humanlike than he first appears. He's determined to keep Mya by his side and protect her from the new world's dangers. When his path starts taking her further away from home, she must choose between safety and her family.

Pleasantly surprised!

I really enjoyed this book. I liked that it was from Mya's point of view and you find out things as she does. Drav slowly learns to speak. I bought the second book already... looking forward to listing to it.

Sucked me in, with reservations

3.5 stars — A weird blend of kind of hokey and hard to suspend my disbelief, mixed with compelling and engaging.

There were times where the pacing fell a little bit, and the book got wrapped up in repetitiveness. The thing is that some of that repetitiveness was about Mya pining for her family and being afraid of Drav and what he was going to do. I had these weird mixed feelings, b/c on the one hand I’m all “I know! We get it!”, but on the other hand, I appreciated that she didn’t just fall all over herself for Drav, b/c it felt more realistic. And I truly felt how much she longed to get to her family.

Mya could be a bit naive in her trusting of humans…again, I had a hard time with this, b/c why wouldn’t she trust humans over demons? But at the same time, we all know bad people exist, so why wouldn’t you be more cautious? And Drav proved over and over that he was interested in protecting her, so why did it take her so long to realize this? Ugh. So hard, b/c it’s probably more realistic. But my fictional loving mind is like “he’s good! Give him a chance!”

I appreciated that things weren’t all black and white with Drav and his people. I’m super intrigued by who they are, and they are menacing…but mostly in their non-humanness. They’re curious about Mya, which makes sense, and they don’t realize what they do is not kosher by human standards.

And while I felt like the whole language learning thing was ENTIRELY unbelievable, it did help the plot, and I loved watching Drav learn. I loved that it remained pretty consistent too, like he couldn’t answer some of her questions b/c he didn’t know the words b/c she hadn’t said them yet. Nice touch.

I think I liked Drav more than Mya. I really felt for him at the end when we finally started to understand his motivations a bit more.

The narrator was not bad. She didn’t really sound like how I would have pictured Mya, but that’s all my own personal tastes, and nothing to do with her. She had great pacing, showed good range of emotions (from fear to frustration), and I actually really loved her Drav voice.

It was ok

I’m not so sure I cared for the plot. There were lots of zombies but none of the thrill or scare. The story, characters just felt undeveloped.

Entertaining but Frustrating

At the beginning, I didn't think I'd finish this book, but it picked up and I made it to the end. That said, it got so frustrating. Answers were available to our heroine, but dear reader, she was too afraid to ask the questions. Wasn't she the least bit curious!?!? No. Then we find out that this whole book is actually Ice Planet Barbarian fan fiction! A plot twist to be sure. Our heroine possesses few survival instincts but manages to continue her dogged search for her family in another book. I will bravely move on to the next book since I want some answers but I'm not too happy about it.

Warning to Oklahoman readers

Let me start by saying that this book is great. I enjoyed it. It was an interesting take on the apocalypse. I was also super excited to read a novel that takes place in my home state. However, I kept getting thrown out of the story BECAUSE it takes place in my home state and I'm not sure the authors have ever been here, much less lived here. So, warning to readers from Oklahoma, there are loads of little things that don't quite sync up. Don't let it make you give up, just try to imagine it's an alternate reality or something. The rest of the story is fun. And if you don't live here, you'll never notice so dont worry.

Great introduction to a new series.

I like this story a lot. It is very entertaining.

Mya’s a college student. After several earthquakes, her world is falling apart as animals with red eyes begin attacking people and start the spread of an infection that is zombie-like. Mya decides to try to make her way home from college to make sure that her family is ok. Some people help her on her way but another creature attacks them leaving Mya sure that she's going to die.

The grey-skinned pointy-eared creature with green/yellow eyes and sharp teeth seems to be more human then he seemed at first. As the two spend more time together, Mya discovers that he is also intelligent and protective. He tells her he will keep her safe and take her home, but can she trust that he will do as he says?

This is a great introduction to this new series, but be aware that it ends in a cliffhanger! (I hate cliffhangers but since the other books in the series are already out, I will make an exception with this book!) This story had me laughing so hard at parts that I almost cried. There are a lot of feels in this story. It's very mild in terms of language and sexual content as this is kind of a hi, how are you, please don't eat me book. I recommend reading this book. Or listening to it!
I own an ebook copy as well as an audible copy.

Unique post-apocalyptic paranormal romance

This is not your average paranormal or post apocolypse romance. The female MC reacts to the situations and hero in a realistic way, I would call this a slow burn.Definitely recommend for fans of Ruby Dixon.

My only criticism is the narration is sometimes over acts dramatic moments but it's not cringe-worthy..

Wow 🤗

This book is everything great! I have been looking for this story line for months.. and being based out of my home state is like icing on the cake.
