Action and Tension From the Start - Great Book!

Grace was raised by an abusive mother, "on the wrong side of the tracks." Grace knew from the time she was able to understand, that her mother purposely got pregnant with a high finance kind of guy, hoping that he would leave his wife for her, the mother of his child. However, he wanted nothing to do with Grace's mother or the child they had created. So, her mother used another way to get what she needed. Blackmail, as long as Grace's father paid her mother the secret circumstances of her birth and existence would be kept quiet.

Grace worked hard to get where she was, a owner of a boutique – well one half owner. The other half was owned by her former partner Mitchell. They have been dating seriously and exclusively for several years. However, a big misunderstanding had Mitchell hurling out horrible things about her mother, made an assumption about Grace which tore her heart out. She left immediately and tried to put the past behind.

A year later they happen to be at the same party and Mitchell concentrates on getting Grace back.

While the story seem to be a bit predictable at first, there were many twists and turns that I (an avid reader/listener) didn't expect and it added a lot to the plot. I was really impressed.

Beth Stewart did a great job in performing this book. She flawlessly narrates and maneuvers between male and female characters with no problem. I found her performance totally believable and not distracting at all, as can be the case with many very diverse characters. Again, she was great.

Notes: Mature themes, strong language and a little bit of violence.
Rating: R

I gave it four stars overall because it was near perfection. Well edited, as well. *I was given the book to listen to in exchange for my unbiased review.* I appreciate the chance to listen to books like this one. Both the author and the narrator are new to me but because of their great talents I have put them on my list of "approved" talent. This means that I will look for everything that either one has done and if it sounds interesting I will add it to my WishList.

I enjoy leaving reviews, as I know that I read them the reviews of others before I purchase a book. If you found my review helpful in your decision about this book, would you please select yes directly below this paragraph? Thank you so much.

Please consider "following me" here on Audible.com. I purchased a lot of books by authors that I am faithful to. I also have the opportunity to review books in all genres, many that I would not pick up on my own. I have been pleasantly surprised by new authors and narrators. Thanks!

** I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review **

Every book I have had the pleasure of listening to by AP has been good...her writing is real, and very easy flowing...I like the worlds she builds, and her characters are always fascinating!

Grace comes from an abusive home, a mother who is a blackmailing gold digger...a father who denies her and wants to cause he nothing but pain...and she still has scratched her way up to a successful business...when her sister dies unexpectedly, leaving her baby niece alone, Grace must step up to the plate to become a mom..Her ex boyfriend Mitch offers to help her, but she has some very bad feelings about how they broke it off...and he ultimately hurt her so deeply she does not want to ever forgive him...Grace wants to do whats best for her baby niece...but at what price to her heart?

LOVED IT!!! WELL WORTH YOUR TIME AND A CREDIT!!!!

One Powerful Story

Any additional comments?

At first I thought OMG an ex who is a stalker but it didn’t take me long to understand they both very much still loved each other. One fighting to be forgiven while the other fighting not to forgive. Secret, lies and half truths will get you every time as Grace finds out. She has her reason which he does not understand. There is no way she can tell him all for it will destroy his life and the faith he puts in mankind. When you love someone you are suppose to listen to their side and then decide. That is how it is suppose to be but it almost never is and never when you have someone telling you thing just to break you up. Once words are said they can’t be taken back as Mitchell finds out. Even in the heat of anger when you are out of your mind those words will stay with a person for a long time. Grace cannot forget that Mitchell would not listen when she tried to tell him and Mitchell was so mad he could not listen he just pointed fingers. This was the downfall for them both. This is a powerful plot I would have to say I most likely would have done as Grace did.

The author starts off with them meeting up at a party Mitchell having a hard time with her cutting him out of her life. He will not take NO for an answer, he really feels bad for believing what others have said and not listening. She said it is over he said it is not he will not give up. Both have powerful feelings as they touch neither can forget how good it was for them. Neither willing to give in as they walk away. When her sister dies in an accident leaves Grace the sole guardian of her nine-month-old niece things get out of control. Mitchell knows she should be at the party when she doesn’t show up he goes to find out why. What he finds is the women he loves falling apart and he can’t take it. He takes over control getting her where she needs to be and taking care of things. He is hoping she will come back to him but things are never as they seem.

Grace is still hiding things she can’t explain leaving her to wonder just how he will react when he finds out. Will this be a repeat of the past or will he have learned his lesson? Mitchell is holding on by a thread every time he takes one step forward she takes two back. There has got to be some way for him to get through to her. He thinks he found the answer which only opens another can of worms.
Beth Stewart did a pretty good job on narration but at times she sounded robotic not all the time just sometimes. Her different character voices were great you could always tell who was talking and just what they were feeling. My heart broke for Grace at her lose and the narrator made me feel it more than if I had read it. She really bought the power out in Mitchell at his over protectiveness to his controlling ways. She made him feel real and down to earth when he held the baby. I could tell a time or two when she took a break and came back. Not always but a few times. I thought she really brought out the characters personalities giving you a real feel for each character. I enjoyed the listen and feel this narrator will get better with time.

This had a wonderful plot at times Mitchell was a little over powering for me. For me he seemed more mafia type lol. He is a very strong character that goes after what he wants never taking a NO. Grace has just had to deal with so much in her lifetime you wonder how she can still be standing. This is one strong willed woman. I think they complaint each other wonderfully if they can ever get their crap together. You have to give Mitchell credit he is really trying to show her how much he loves her. He falls in love with that baby at first sight which makes you wonder why he was so upset when he thought she was pregnant. I really liked both characters and my heart went out to them both. Looking from the outside in you get a better handle and you can see both sides but then again you know everything the other does not. I really enjoyed this authors writing style she had me hook from page one all the way to the last page. She throws you twist after twist and you wonder how everyone is still left standing. At first I thought the abuse was from Mitchell but once you find out where and who you really would like to have a piece of these people. It really is a very powerful story. The ending was OMG mind blowing when something happens to drive Mitchell over the edge. I would have liked to see a little more of their life a few years down the road. It does have a HAE but you wonder if it will ever come. I was totally hooked on this book and can’t wait to see more work from this author.

Can't let go

Any additional comments?

Good strong characters, lots of angst, no easy forgiveness--for the most part. I felt the ending was a bit rushed. But all in all, a very good stroy and narration

Loved it!

I love love love a strong female heroine who makes the hero grovel for forgiveness. The only thing I was not crazy about was the narrator. I think she was totally wrong for this story. She had absolutely no inflection in her tone and could've been reading the phone book for what it's worth. The narrator was not horrible, but she was not good either. Other than that it was a really great storyline.

Enjoyed it!

The author did a good job of portraying the main characters as strong independent people with the ability to make it on their own. While making their story that much better because they come together in the end.

The narrator did a good job grammatically as well as with pitch. She was able to distinguish between characters without becoming whiny or screeching a many others do.

I enjoyed both the story line and the narration of this one and look forward to more from both the author and narrator.

Oddly Enthralling

Any additional comments?

This audiobook was provided by the author/narrator/publisher free of charge in exchange for an unbiased review ***

Let me start by saying I read/listen to A LOT of books. And this one's format is different.
I almost thought I had stumbled onto the middle of a series --- there is backstory that the viewer is informed of but even so, it doesn't feel like "told not seen" and you don't feel lost, and you don't get bored. I kind of liked it. If there had been a Book 1 type thing, it would be all the angsty build up that you always think "they could have just summed that up" -- well, this author just did that for you.

In the same vein though, I almost thought there might be another book coming out to wrap up this one, because it seemed like there was going to have to be more to get these two characters all kissed&made up at the end. Yes, it ends, and it isn't a cliffhanger, but if this were a book, I'd flip the page expecting another chapter on the other side --- an epilogue at the least.

Did it detract from the story? NO! And THAT is the odd thing! Although there were several things I'd normally be turned off about in a book, this particular story's title says it all: couldn't let go. I kept listening. The narrator is good, the pacing zipped along so well I never got bored, and when I found myself interrupted by outside forces, I was perturbed about having to pause the story.

There were things in the plot that normally bother me, but I still found myself enjoying the story, and to a large extent, cutting the characters slack.
Like the hero. What a tool. BUT - he is a nice guy. He doesn't make grand gestures like hiring a parade and singing to the heroine it's not like that happens in real life. He didn't become a Book Boyfriend that the reader falls in love with and wishes were real. But he works for this story and this heroine. He falls into insta love with the child in this book, but I was fine going along with that. I've met a couple of kids that sweet. I like that the heroine doesn't fall right into his arms with his professed apology for his rotten treatment of her. But I also like that the author shows you why she eventually does forgive him. I like that with a few small things, the author shows that the hero really does love her (like all her things waiting for her for over a year)
The hero freezing the heroine out at the end was frustrating and the ending kind of jumps up on you at that point and that's where it felt like there should be another installment coming --- one that SHOWS the characters new growth. But again, despite that, it was still satisfying enough that I was happy to have listened to it. And I enjoyed this story enough that I would be interested in seeing what else this author has to offer.

Hmm

Some parts of the overall story moved to slowly for me. By that I mean that there was flashback that I didnt necessarily care for. I just didnt think all of it was needed. I also didn't care for the ending. It seemed rushed. They were so back and forth about being together and reunited in the last ten minutes. It was definitely more of an HFN than an HEA. The narration was just ok for me. Her voice just didnt carry as much emotion when she did the men's voices.
