Publisher's summary

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux knows she is the best - but she does not know if even she is good enough for this job. Hired by the dangerously beautiful archangel Raphael, a being so lethal that no mortal wants his attention, Elena knows failure is not an option - even if the task is impossible. Because this time, it's not a wayward vamp she has to track. It's an archangel gone bad.

The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other - and pull her to the razor's edge of passion. Even if the hunt does not destroy her, succumbing to Raphael's seductive touch just might. For when archangels play, mortals break.

Hot, very hot.

Not having read anything but this Author, the reviews are what tempted me to give it a try. I am not a fan of cheesy romances or books of this genre that can be just one sexual escape after another. I mean, come on, how bout a page turning plot that happens to have a hot romantic story to it too. And this is what Singh delivers. This book is sexy and riviting with an interesting original take on the angel/vampire story. I found this writer much better than others like Christine Feehan or Karen Moning who i found utterly predictable and boring. Loved it. So much so that i went out and bought the second of the series (which was equally well written!) Shame on Audible for not carring more books from this series. i have every intention of looking into the psy/changling series by Singh through other vendors. You wont regret dropping a credit on this one.

Narrator is Definitely A Personal Preference

This storyline is so good and refreshing. I do not even know what to say about the narrator. Her voice has a lot of vibrato. She is not bad BUT different. There were times when I truly tried to get into the story and accept with an open heart and mind the shaky voice telling it. However, toward the end, I found it a real challenge to listen to the story without being distracted by the narrator's unique voice.

This is one of those times when you either love her voice or hate it. Listen to a sample and take it from there. I really liked the story though.

Who Knew, Angels could be so hot!

This is the first book in Nalini Singh's Guild Hunters series.
Singh's main charater is a kick-butt, kinda girl. She is a "Born" Vampire Hunter. And she is the best there is. Her life is going fine, until she is hired by the very sexy, Archangel, Raphael. (who knew wings could be hot?)

I can't wait for the next Guild Hunter book called "Archangel's Kiss" to come out.

Singh is also the author of the Psy-Changeling Series. But, I don't think any books in that series are offered as audiobooks.

Awful!

Finally finished listening to the story this morning. Ugh. I think this was supposed to be a romantic adventure, but it felt like a horror novel through and through. I didn't like any of the characters, and I had serious issues with the ethics and morals of pretty much everyone in this story. They were either actively evil, amoral, or supporting the activities of said evil and amoral characters.

I should have stopped when I hit the end of part one, and Elena, our supposedly-intrepid vampire hunter chick, still hadn't actually started the job she'd been hired to do in chapter two...hunt down a serial-killer angel. Instead, Elena spent most of Part 1 trying to fend off Raphael, the creepy, possessive, sexual-predator "hero," who spends the first half of the book mind-raping her, stalking her, and sexually harassing her. He's the one who hires her for her unique talent in hunting down runaway slave vampires, but then he keeps her from doing her job because he really wants to have sex with her and make her "his toy." (That's actually how he refers to her.)

So many things wrong with this book. A "hero" who implausibly (as in, we're told this but don't see any actual evidence of his character change) falls in love with our supposedly-spunky (read, rude and mouthy for no good reason) heroine after she repeatedly tells him "no" to his various attempts to seduce her.

In the course of the story, Raphael takes advantage of his position as the ruler of New York to do various creepy things like taking control of Elena's mind, feeding her aphrodisiacs, repeatedly groping her, kidnapping her, and oh, yeah, turning her into a supernatural being at the end of the book quite against her stated will (in fact, she pleads with him not to do it). And all of this is presented as somehow okay and romantic because the author tells us it's True Love. I dunno--on *my* planet, if someone has power over another person, and keeps making unwelcome sexual advances despite being told "no," that's harassment and sexual assault.

And Raphael is supposed to be the romantic lead, the "good guy." The "bad guy" angel is a predictably over-the-top serial killer, but we don't spend much of the book focusing on him, so his characterization and motivations are sketchy at best. Honestly, this would have been a more satisfying story if Raphael had been the bad guy, and Elena finally managed to get rid of her stalker and overthrow the angels. Instead, she eventually decides that his pretty blue eyes and bulging biceps excuse the mind-rape and other indignities, and falls in love with him.

And the world-building, which had a lot of potential for conflict--despotic, frequently-cruel angels who are the absolute rulers over mankind, with vampires as the angels' slaves and bond-servants--is used by the author merely to create a circumstance under which our spunky heroine finds it impossible to refuse the hero's job offer or to slap him with a restraining order. Otherwise, there's really no exploration of a fundamentally unjust society ruled by an oligarchy of supernatural tyrants who can murder, rape, and otherwise do whatever they want to mere humans without consequence. A vampire slave who tries to break free of their angelic masters is recaptured or killed by vampire hunters, like our heroine, humans who are actively supporting the angelic tyranny. And the angels have no oversight and very little compassion for their subjects. Might makes right in this universe, and the angels are the mightiest so if they say something's okay, it's okay. For example, when the serial-killer angel goes off the rails, there's a concerted effort to cover up the true extent of his crimes, and keep the oppressed masses in ignorance. And this is presently as a perfectly okay thing by all the characters.

In short, this was a novel filled with unsympathetic characters, sexual assaults disguised as romance, and poorly-thought-out moral conflicts. Add to this mess a narrator with a flat, nasal voice, and I'm really glad I picked this up during one of the $4.95 sales and didn't pay full price for it.

Too dark... Little romance

I love Nalini Singh's style and I have all the audiobooks available of her PsyChangelling series. I tried this one hoping to see a similar style but I was disappointed. This is a very dark series. Very explicit murder scenes are detailed and it was gross. And let me tell you I'm not easily grossed out (I'm a True Blood fan). The romantic parts although few, were very good but they got lost in torn bodies and lots of blood. And then hearing about evil angels is kind of strange. To top it of the reader's voice can be a little annoying after a while. She screeches! I don't think I'll get the other books of this series. But I do recommend Ms. Singh's Psy Changelling series which is just perfect!

Snobbish, Nasal, Pompous, Arrogance

I can see that the publisher has been hard at work creating great reviews for this book. Unfortunately, I could not get much farther then chapter 1 due to the narration. Justine Eyre, has a very distinctive voice that removes all ability to allow yourself to sink in to the story. Her voice comes across as snobbishly pompous in an arrogant surreal fashion with just a touch of nasal annoyance that makes the whole experience simply hideous. I absolutely love vampire stories but this is one that I will not be able to sink my teeth in. Do yourself a favor and listen to the sample before you purchase this story.

Ummm, was I 'reading' the same book?

Story-
I heard so many good things about this book and with a very high rating on Amazon, I decided to try it. I was expecting it to be similar to the Katie Macalister series(without the humor). Considering that found it on recommendation in the romance genre, I expected a steamy book with a murder mystery (which I really don't care about, but if it's in the background I don't really mind).

What I got was a story which made my stomach turn more times than I can count.
Maybe I'm sensitive, but I really don't want to read about gory details of the murders. After the very graphic description of the murder scene where one girl's intestines ended up in her mouth, I stopped listening. Not to mention the disturbing combo of sex and violence- the heroine still craves sex with certain people even though she constantly keeps repeating that she might be killed by them.

And even before these two things became an issue, I lost the interest in the characters' 'romance.' No real emotional connection, just plain 'oh-my-I-want-to-jump-your-bones-because-you're-so-fine.' At the end, this is a bizarre mix of paranormal, romance and murder genre.

To be fair, it started out great with lots of potential, but it all just went downhill at about half of the book. If you like VERY DARK books with kinky violence-sex combination this might be your cup of tea, but I'll avoid this author like the plague from now on.

Narration-
The narration was great and I suspect it's probably the only reason why I listened to it for as long as I have.

This was my second time listening to this book and I enjoyed it more the first time. I only re-listened to it because it was chosen for my book club and I couldn't remember it well enough for a discussion. This time I think it felt like all the other PNR I've read before. I was enjoyable and full of excitement, Raphael was HOT and a little bit of an Ass in the beginning but I grew to love him. I loved that the author mixes vampires, angels and a special human breed to hunt vampires. The narration was great, I love Justine Eyre but I will say she sounds more like an English afternoon tea kinda women than a young Vampire hunter

It just didn't work for me

I don't know if it was the awful narration (she has an irritating nasal sound) or the cruel angel storyline that just didn't work for me. I love Nalini Singh's Psy-changeling series and had very high hopes of liking this one as well. Sadly the story just didn't draw me in like her other books. If you like stories of Angels that are not so angelic then you will probably like this one. I would suggest listening to the sample narration first. I suspect you will either love it or hate it. I'm just happy I got this one on sale.

Absolutely brilliant.

Singh is incredible. This book is so well written, the characters so real, that it will blow you away. Justine Eyre's contribution cannot be understated. The timber of her voice is spot on, and so perfectly realizes the horror and attraction Elena feels. What amazes me most is how chilling and alien Raphael is, even during the steamier scenes. You feel his otherness, his lack of humanity, and it's beautifully horrifying. Nalini Singh has a new devoted fan. Brilliant.
